Understanding where route and waypoint info is stored in a Nuvi 2598LMT-D

Hello I am a relative newcomer (I am in the UK) to using Basecamp to create routes (trips) to load on my Nuvi 2598 and I am not even certain that this Nuvi is specified to receive routes from Basecamp but it is working Ok. I hope I am posting this in the correct forum.

I will be grateful if anyone can offer clarification about how the info is stored/used by the Nuvi.

It works OK and the routes appear as Trips in the Nuvi

When I send the route to the SD card on the Nuvi it creates a file route.gpx and an associated file waypoint.gpx

I sent it to the SD card to avoid taking up internal memory space but I am not sure if there will be a storage limit for how many routes it will take as it seems the route via points and waypoints are taken into the Current.gpx file in the internal memory storage on power up, even though I send the route to the 32Gb SD card in the Nuvi. The route.gpx and waypoint.gpx files remain on the SD card but appear to be redundant once they have been "read" by the Nuvi and subsumed into the Current.gpx file. I have proved this by deleting them from the SD card and the Trips and Waypoints (which appear in the Favourites on the Nuvi) are still present and working on the Nuvi.

Is this the expected way the Basecamp/Nuvi should work together? Is there any advantage in storage terms of sending routes via the SD card if they will just be subsumed into the Nuvi internal storage when it has read the files?

I hope my explanation makes sense and will be grateful for any response

Thanks

You do not need to worry about space taken up by routes or waypoints. The unit has fixed limits on the number of both (probably 20 routes and 1000 waypoints). As you have seen, the GPX file is created only as a way to get the information onto the device. When it boots, it reads the GPX file and stores the data in a hidden database.
  • Also once the data is in the nuvi you should delete the files sent there by BaseCamp. If you don't do that then when you do want to delete them you won't be able to do so. The reason for this is that the Garmin auto devices merge any .gpx file other then current.gpx into inaccessible memory, then rewrites current.gpx (which is a one way copy) of your waypoints/routes.

Note that your unit will hold up to 200 routes and 1000 favourites.
  • Thanks Red90rover and SUSSAMB for your replies.

Could I please ask supplementary questions.

I understand that the SD card will store Custom POI and Map info thus saving internal memory space (or in the case of Map info, is this providing an overspill store due to limits of internal memory space?)

You have advised that my Nuvi will accept 200 routes and 1000 waypoints. Does the Nuvi always reserve itself sufficient internal memory to accommodate these? A route may have many Via points and Waypoints, are these part of the 1000 limit?

I am unlikely to get near these limits but I am technically curious

    Thanks
  • No, it's not overspill. If a map won't fit in internal memory it's installed to the SD card, either manually by the user or automatically by Express.

Route data is separate from favourites, so waypoints, viapoints etc that are unique within that route don't count towards the 1000.
  • Thanks SUSSAMB for your reply.

As a newcomer to these forums I am not yet familiar with its operation and will be grateful if you could steer me in the right direction.

Is there an option somewhere for me to receive an email alert when a reply is posted to my thread? I did not receive one for your replies.

Is there a sub forum which deals just with Nuvi issues ? ( i.e. not linked with Basecamp, Express, etc) For example I have a query in with Garmin Support about Favourite Categories remaining in the Nuvi even when I have deleted all favouites assigned to that category. Should I wish to raise that problem in the forums which sub forum should it go in?

Thanks again for the info about route and favourite limits
  • There aren't any forums here for automobile device issues, however you could try posting here http://forums.gpsreview.net/categories/garmin-auto-forum-garmin-nuvi-forum
