BaseCamp bashing and what do you find difficult

I used to be a BaseCamp basher but once I figured out how BaseCamp was organized I like it. A couple of years ago I deleted all my other mapping programs and use BaseCamp exclusively and as yet haven't missed much.

I would like to hear exactly what others find its shortcomings are and what operations they find difficult. Maybe we can create a list to pass on to Garmin if they ever start working on BaceCamp again. Try to be specific and not too wordy.
  • The latter is not a basecamp issue. BaseCamp can delete data etc on handheld devices but the way auto devices work doesn't allow it.
  • First Garmin needs to understand BaseCamp is the most important tool they have

Assign a function key for tools
Connect devices to Basecamp/computer via WIFI or Bluetooth
Delete files from the device from within Basecamp

This post is more about features that the GPS units don't have to support closer design alignment to Basecamp features.

Ditto.. Garmin went through a period of the newer GPS models not supporting the downloading of routes and waypoints into the GPS.. I emailed them with words to the effect how can their flagship GPS models not support this.. Finally the 3597 series became available that supports the key function for me...

I was looking for other brand GPS models in case this feature never came back..

I do wish there was closer design alignment between BaseCamp and the GPS software, for example allowing the various BaseCamp waypoint symbols to download and display on the GPS.. On older units that supported this, it was a nice way to look at the map on the GPS when zoomed out.

I suspect that one issue when importing and manipulating routes in BC is that the app occasionally treats a route as a logged Track and therefore thins the inline Waypoints after the first recalculation. This may not happen very often and may be user error, but it happened to me with a previous version of BC the first time I imported.

"Assign a function key for tools"... You mean other that the ones already assigned? i.e. "H" for Pan, "Z" for zoom, etc. Or are you talking about some other tools?
  • Here are my requests so far...

    1. Search and Filter tool (bottom left corner). While this tool works fine to select different classes of objects in the selected List, it doesn’t update those objects on the map. Ex: If there are routes and waypoints in the selected List and you select the waypoints filter, only the waypoints appear in the List but all objects still appear on the map where only the waypoints should appear (same as the List).

    2. Device Transfer Options. A better explanation of the “Always match route to the map on my device when transferring” is needed. At this point it doesn’t seem to do anything. The pulldown Device select field needs to automatically select the connected device.

    3. Custom Waypoint Symbols (icons). Should have more than 8 and they should be transferable to the Device.

    4. Joining selected Routes/Tracks tools. Why are the tools in the Edit/Advanced menu not on the toolbar? Most if not all should be.

    5. Trip Planner tool. Either make it usable or remove it. As it is it is worthless. (This item will need it's own thread)
  • If you have the option to “Always match route to the map on my device when transferring” doesn't that imply that you could have two different maps installed and your Basecamp route will change?
That is what I think it means too but it wouldn't have taken much to state that in the Help section.

You can add more custom waypoints, just keep increasing the numbers up. 001 002 003 004......099 and restart BC after you add them to the folder.
Really, I will have to try that, THANKS.

I agree, totally trash the trip planner

  • Frustrating that its not supported any longer

I find it difficult to accept that Garmin has not updated the many many flaws and inadequacies of Basecamp over the last 13 months. One can only surmise becuase they are or have stopped support of Basecamp. Even with those flaws and inadequacies Basecamp is still a very functional tool for designing routes even if off road and the best tool Ive used which makes it even more frustrating that Garmin has dropped support.

This thread was started to list exactly what "many many flaws and inadequacies" actually means to each user. Without specifics no software engineer could even begin to figure out what needs to be changed.
  • BaseCamp Improvements

This would only affect geocachers, but I'd love to see BaseCamp:
    1. Embrace the concept of Child Waypoints. Every other geocaching app does this.
    2. Add support for the Geocaching.com API for updating Lists and content. Searching with the API would be a plus.
    3. Alter the GPX file output to be more generic. I have seen too many apps that won't import a BaseCamp geocaching GPX file. Loading and resaving with GSAK saves the file with new headers/schema that are accepted by everything.

    1. Direct import of excel files
    2. Sortable custom fields
    3. Better printing
    4. Waypoint symbols downloadable to device (may not be BC issue, but no harm in asking)
    5. Better support for legacy GPS units (276C, 376C, 478)
