Address search help

Hello everyone,

I am trying to comprehend BaseCamp's address search feature. For the life of me I cannot get it to return useful results. E.g., searching for "The Colony Cottages" in Bar Harbour, ME (20 ME-3, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, USA), by name or address or ZIP, returns nothing useful, whether I use the advanced search or not. More often than not when planning my moto trips I find myself having to manually add custom waypoints for pretty much everything. Which is far more tedious than it should be. Another example: There's a motel in Maine at 4755 Carrabassett Rd (ZIP 04982) that I am unable to find using BaseCamp. In fact, searching for 4755 Carrabassett Rd. gets me 8006 Carrabassett Rd!

Am I just doing something wrong here?

Try SR 3 instead of ME-3. I do not currently have a Maine map installed for Basecamp, but that should get you closer to downtown Bar Harbor by an order of magnitude.

Some people recommend Ctrl-Alt-F but I do all my address searching in Mapsource as I find it quicker and more user friendly for this particular function; then I copy and paste the resulting Waypoint to Basecamp. The alternative is to save the location in Google Earth then copy the longtitude and latitude to a new waypoint in Basecamp.
  • If you are looking for a specific POI search for the name and a location, but omit the address. For example “Colony Cottages, ME” or “Colony Cottages, Bar Harbor, ME”. If this fails, then your search item isn’t in the POI database and you will have to do an address lookup – i.e. omit the “The Colony Cottages” and search “Address Road, City, State”.

Addresses may not provide an exact location as they are usually distributed evenly along a road/block. In the naming of State highways/roads and county roads can vary from state to state. For roads below a US highway, try the generic Hwy first. For example, “20 Hwy 3, Bar Harbor, ME”.

This may or may not give you the address, but it will probably give a result. If it doesn’t search the “City, State” to get to that location. The hand tool can then be used to see the specific name used for a road in that area. Just place it over the road and wait for a pop-up. You may find in BaseCamp that ME-3 is ME 3, Hwy 3, State Road 3, SR 3 or even have a name like “Johnson Road”. You can then use this term to find the address.

As mentioned above, if you are looking for a specific place that does not show up in the data base, then an online search is your best bet to get a more precise location.
  • I used "20 hwy 3, Bar Harbor, ME 04609" and BaseCamp found the address without issue but “The Colony Cottages” do not seem to be in BaseCamps database (not surprised as there are many places missing).
