updating gpx file on the device

IIRC the file that carries data to the device will be a GPX file and will have all the data that's in the database "my collection".

what happens to the data that is already installed on the device with the same name?

Will it be overwritten or will it be duplicated on the device with a number on the end of the file name as basecamp does.

Well only all of your collection will be sent if that's what you intended, you can send just partial data. As to exactly what happens this can vary.

If I'm planning to send a lot of data then I delete all the data off my device and resend the whole lot from BaseCamp. That ensures that my device gets exactly what I expect.
