Switched from MapSource to BasCamp

Hi,
I have changed my navigator from my old good friend nuvi, which served me well for almost 10 years, to new Garmin DriveAssist 51 LMT-S.
I have discovered that my other good old friend mapsource can't work with new garmin anymore.
Ok, not a big deal, if basecamp is better.
But. In compare to MapSource, BC is ..... You know what do I mean.
It is absolutely not user friendly, not intuitive application.
Couple of questions:
1. I would like to handle my waypoints like I did in mapsource. Just want to see all of them separatelly, sort by category etc, i want just send/receive them from/to device. That's it.
I don't want this mess, when basecamp import all waypoint everytime and mess them with tracks.

2. Iwould like to handle tracks, like I did in mapsource - import all tracks from device, sort them by date, view details, combine them etc.
Basecamp even doesn't know how to sort them by track start time.

I beleive I am not alone with the problem.
Please advice where to find answers to my questions.
  • BaseCamp is different so there is a learning process. I switched to it many years ago and would never go back.

However if you're comfortable with MapSource and it fits your needs (it doesn't fit mine) your new device will work with it, you just need to switch the device from mtp to mass storage mode. I don't have a drive model but on a nuvi (and the drive will probably be the same):

    1. Bring up the volume screen on the GPS.

    2. On the upper right hand corner. Press your finger on screen and hold for appx 10 seconds.

    3. Shortly you will see the developers screen.

    4. Find MTP Settings and touch it.

    5. It will show 3 selections. MTP Auto Detect,Mass Storage and Mass Storage Single Session.

    6. Touch Mass Storage as your selection.

    7. Select save.

sbrytskyy, BASECAMP has come a long way since it was first introduced, The only issue I have with it (and many others) is the way you store the data, in my opinion it sucks compared to the way mapsource stores data. If you make a bunch of list and list folders, as far as I can tell, there is now easy way to back this up, if you back up using export or use their "cloud", all the list and list folders are lost if you lose your data on the hard drive. Good luck backing up your data.
  • Backing up is simple. One way us just to copy the database folder.

Where is that located?? Does not seem easy to me, why is there not a menu option to perform a true backup? The Garmin cloud also does not make a complete backup.
  • Search for a folder named 4.6 if you want to do it manually but the backup function in BaseCamp preserves the folder structure AFAIK, not sure about the cloud as I never back up anything to the cloud.

Export isn't designed to retain the folder structure.

For those same reasons I still use Mapsource for almost everything I do because the majority of what I do does not require the "advanced" features in Basecamp.

You can do as SUSSAMB suggested and continue to use Mapsource directly from your new device.

If your device will not switch modes that way or if you have difficulty getting it to switch, there is another way. You can cut/copy and paste between Basecamp and Mapsource (and also in the other direction) and it happens intelligently.

    1. Connect your device to Basecamp.
    2. Once the waypoints and tracks and routes have loaded you can select them all and copy (Ctrl-C) or cut (Ctrl-X) them.
    3. Run Mapsource and paste (Ctrl-V). Now you will have everything in Mapsource the way you are used to.
    4. Exit Basecamp without saving so you do not accumulate the data in it.

    ...ken...
  • I agree, Basecamp is NOT user friendly, but stick with it, it's GREAT once you get the hang of it. This forum is your friend. Got all my questions answered almost immediately.
