Etrex Summit HC and Basecamp upload

I have an Etrex Summit HC and I am trying to update its firmware from v2.4.2 to version 3.3. I am running Windows 10 and Basecamp 4.6.2.

When I open BaseCamp, connect my GPS device and turn the device on, Basecamp finds my device, identifies the unit and unit ID, and BaseCamp populates with data from my unit.

In BaseCamp, when I go to device --> update, BaseCamp reports an update is available for my Summit HC, advises me an update will wipe my data, and when I tell it to proceed, BaseCamp advises it is erasing my device and then returns the message "no device connected - try plugging in a USB cable or if the problem persists contact Garmin". I have checked my GPS device's settings --> interface to make sure Garmin is selected. When I do this my device reports it is connected.

Since BaseCamp finds my device when I plug it in it seems like the connection is good. Is there a workaround to force the update?
