Install bought map on PC for Basecamp

Hi there

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I just cannot find a solution (very annoying, because it seems to be such a simple thing).

I got the Zumo 595LM with pre-installed City Navigator Europe 2017. In additon to this map, I also bought the Map "City Navigator® Morocco NT" and installed it on the Zumo. While the Zumo is connected to Basecamp, I can use both maps.

But in order to do route planning without connected Navi, I need to install also the new Morocco map on the PC.

While it was no problem with the Europe map using Garmin Express to install the map on the PC, it seems not to be possible with the second map (morocco). In Garmin Express I cannot chose the maps I want to install, it always only installs the Europe map on the PC.

Based on the discussion in the forum I also tried it with a virtual folder in Windows 8 in which I copied the IMG of the morocco map from the Zumo (together with the gma and uml files), but Basecamp does not recognize this either.

I feel so stupid and frustrated now, please help with any hint.

Thanks a lot!

Wolfgang
  • You really only have two routes, if you don't want to connect your Zumo, one is the virtual device and the other is a sd card/usb stick with the map on it. If you're having trouble with the virtual drive this may help:

    http://www.javawa.nl/virtualdevice.html

Note in particular the virtual drive must be recognised as a removable USB device.

Thanks for your answer. So I will stop spending hours and hours for this.... And with your help I also understand why my virtual drive doesn't work with the map, because it's not recognized as removable USB drive. THANKS!

Now the new virtual USB drive created with ImDisk contains in the folder Garmin the *.img, *.gma and *.unl files of the morocco map.

The drive and the map on it are recognized by Basecamp (I also checked the availability for Basecamp with JaVaWa Device Manager before).

But as soon as I click on the map shown in the virtual drive in Basecamp, it says that while using "CN Middle East & N Africa NT 2017.2 map" an error occured.

Desperately asking for hints again :-(

I got some screenshots for you to proof that everything looks correct (sorry, it's in German but you will get the point I hope).

  • Does the map show in the drop down list of maps in the toolbar? Try selecting it there. Do you get the same error?

Yes, it's available in the dropdown list. But only until I try to use it - after the error message it dispappears.
  • To eliminate a map issue are you able to copy those files onto a USB memory stick and then see if BC will work with that? The files need to be in a folder named Garmin on the stick.

That's a brilliant idea, just to make sure that it's not the fault of my virtual USB drive I tried it with a physical USB stick (I feel so stupid that I did not get this idea...).

But unfortunately it's exactly the same effect with a "real" USB stick. It still says "An error occured when attempting to use the CN middle East & N Africa NT 2017.2 Map Product.

Could it be that it's any kind of copy protection? That on the USB stick (virtual or physically) the map must be activated somehow before it can be used?

But while in the Basecamp menu Maps -> Manage Map Products the base map "City Navigator Europe" has the status "unlocked", for the morocco map it says "Not lockable", so I have no idea if this could be the issue or if there's no activation needed at all. Because of this also the option "Unlock Online" is inactive.

So does this procedure (copy the map from the garmin device to a USB stick) should work normally for the "offline" usage of maps in Basecamp?
  • Well it should and always has, however Garmin have been tightening up their security over the recent months and so it's quite possible that newer maps simply won't allow what has happened in the past. Looks like you may be stuck with having to use your Zumo, however there is one more thing you could try. Copy the GarminDevice.xml file from the Garmin folder on your Zumo to the Garmin folder on your usb stick and see if that makes any difference. If not then I'm out of ideas.

It's not likely it has anything to do with it being a virtual drive versus a real usb drive. Basecamp doesn't know the difference (it just wants it to be removeable). It's easy enough to try (but you got the expected result).

Try removing the *.gma and *.unl files (move them to another folder) from the virtual drive.

Thanks for all these hints. Neither the removal of the *.gma and *.unl files (moved to another folder) on the virtual drive nor the copy of the GarminDevice.xml file did change the behaviour. Stubborn Basecamp.

Looks I have to get a cracked version of the map I already bought :-(

But before this, I sent a mail to the Garmin support now, let's see what they say.

Just sad that I spent all the weekend for this instead doing the trip planning...
