copy or duplicate route

I'm using basecamp 4.6.2 I've tried copying a route to make another route based on the original. Why does it also change the original route? I've tried doing this by using 'duplicate' as well but get the same result. I spend a lot of time plotting routes and it would save a lot of effort if I could just copy one and make changes. Any ideas?

If you copy a route any changes made to the copy will apply to the original. If you duplicate a route, changes made to the duplicate will leave the original untouched or vice versa.

Waypoints, Via and Shaping points are all stored together. Therefore the Names of Waypoints, Via and Shaping points must be unique - i.e. a Waypoint and Shaping point can't have the same name. When a Route is duplicated, there is an option to duplicate the Waypoints - this will create new Waypoints with a new Name and will be independent of those in the original Route. However, Via and Shaping points are not duplicated. Moving a Via or Shaping point in a duplicate Route will also move the point in the original Route.

If you wish to use the same Waypoints, do not choose the option to duplicate them and do not move them in the duplicate Route.

Do not move any Shaping or Via points in the duplicate Route. Changes should be made by adding new Shaping/Via points and deleting existing points.

Duplicating Routes

To summarise:
Open Relevant List. Highlight the Route say "Xyz"
Select "Duplicate" with the "No" option
This adds Route "Xyz 1" to the Original list.
Route "Xyz 1" can be changed (and renamed) without affecting Route "Xyz".
To tidy things up, highlight Route "Xyz 1" and "Send To" relevant List Folder, Creating "New name list".
This will move "Xyz 1" and take a copy of the way point set with it.

Correction to above summary.

To create a new Route based on an existing Route you need to use the Duplicate command.

The Yes option will create new Waypoints with new names. These Waypoints will behave independent of the originals.

The No option uses the same Waypoints in the original Route. Move one of these Waypoints and it will move in both Routes.

Unless things have changed, Via/Shaping points are not renamed with either option. But like Waypoints, each Via/Shaping point must have a unique name. So if you see any type of Point under the Route Properties with the same name in different Routes, they are the same point. Move one in one Route and it will move in the other Route.

To edit/change a Duplicate Route that uses Via/Shaping points, add new Via/Shaping points and delete unwanted ones. (Via/Shaping points are points added by clicking on the map; they do not show up under My Collection and are gray/grey in the Route Properties list.)

It depends how you use Waypoints.
My Waypoints are always fixed named points. For example Car Parks, Pubs, Places of Interest.
To create a new route I will either remove or add Waypoints and move the intermediate shaping points as required.
Duplicating with the "Yes" option just creates an unwanted clutter of duplicated waypoints (with suffix "1") for the same location

Thanks everyone. I think I get what you are saying so I'll give it a try. Typically my routes have two waypoints, a start and an end but some have a mid way stop as well. Ill report back.
