1 Year Anniversary

It's been one year since the release of BaseCamp 4.6.2. What do you think? Do we have the BaseCamp we're ever going to get?
BC is just an adequate application for the purpose but there is so much more that Garmin could do. Maybe they should let it go open source as they appear to have lost interest.

What are your ideas?
  • Not sure I want anything else, does exactly what I need at the moment :)
  • An update would be great to fix many of its quirks and strange behaviors to make the program more functional. AFter 1 year of no updates I suspect Garmin doesnt see Basecamp fitting in their strategic vision for the future.

  • I've got a whole list here somewhere. I'll find it eventually. But as a start.

It would be nice if BC didn't latch on to every removable memory device regardless of whether the device has a Garmin directory structure or not.
It would be nice to not need to click the search button twice in order to fill out the list.
It would be nice for BC to use the icon from a found item in the search results list when you add the waypoint to BC instead of the generic flag icon.
It could use some user controlled filtering for the track list to filter out the occasional reported speed of 300 MPH on a public roadway.

There are a bunch more from several years of working with BC. As I said it does an adequate job but there's always room for improvement if they care.
  • I prefer that BC uses any USB drive, I have one permanently plugged in with BC data.

You only need one click of the search button, second one only if you need to extend the search. Makes sense to me.

Agree would be nice to use same icon if you use an item found in search.

    Not seen your last issue.

Problem is that everyone is different, what some do want others don't. Seems to me BC is a good compromise at the mo.
  • Possible improvements to BC

It is interesting in this context to note why I occasionally open Mapsource and hence how BC could be improved.

    1. I find the Ctrl F (find) and especially the postcode search much more efficient in MS than BC, so I set up a waypoint and then copy it to BC. Maybe I should re-load BC one day but sometimes it takes ages to find a postcode so i give up.

    2. I find the 'find nearest places' function more user friendly, I am never sure in BC whether the search box is really finding nearest places or just finding places. Also, using the place category is easier in MS when using find nearest places.

    3. If I have several Tracks and want to do some analysis of them in Excel, then I copy the tracks to MS then select ALL, then Ctrl C to copy all, then paste in to Excel. All the required fields come in to Excel.

    I may think of more.
  • Try using Ctrl + Alt + F and Ctrl + Alt + A instead, helps when searching in BaseCamp.

    Indeed it does. Thanks
