I've seen may suggestions on this topic and tried them without fixing the problem. The problem exists on both my Windows 8 and Mac. When I follow the steps in the support article "Device not recognized by the computer"... a mass storage device does appear in the devices window but when I let go of the up button it disappears. So I only get to step 8. The computer chimes when I first plug in the cable and them again when the icon disappears.
  • Could you explain what you're attempting to do, ie why are you trying to connect to your PC?

To be able to save the photos and data so that I can work with those items on my computer and delete them from the Garmin.

The support page I'm referring to is on the Garmin support. Search for "device not recognized by the computer" it's the top item. In what you last sent my device does show the USB icon. The drives shows up briefly in devices when I do the up arrow hold at connection. Then disappears before I can go on.
  • Why are you even touching the device, just plug it in. No need to 'do an up arrow hold'?

    Hello Sussamb,
On the old Edge705 there is a procedure called "Boot Block" where you hold the joystick forward and then turn on the device. It is used to connect a device that is not recognized using normal methods. The OP is doing a similar "Boot Block" procedure with his 62.

    Hello Komma,
On the Edge we have to hold the joystick forward the entire time to maintain a connection so the data can be copied out and new software can be pasted in. Try holding that "Up Arrow" the entire time.
  • Thanks Don, I'm aware of the boot block procedure ;)

Just confused as to why the OP was doing it, needs to try normal methods first, particularly as I'm not clear if the boot block applies to the 62.

    Edit:

Seems there is a boot block for the 62, which differs slightly so that may be the issue, as follows.

If your device is not recognized by your computer as a separate drive and the device is in mass storage mode, you will want to perform a boot block on your mass storage device. A boot block forces communication between your computer and the GPS. Mass storage devices pertaining to this article are the following GPS series:

    Oregon • Dakota • GPSMAP 62 • GPSMAP 78 • Colorado • Edge 500 / 705 / 800 • Rino 600 Series • Astro 320 • eTrex 10 / 20 / 30 • Montana

To perform a boot block on your mass storage device use the following steps to prompt your computer to recognize the device:
1.Turn the device off and insure all cables are disconnected from the GPS
2.Press and hold the power button
3.Continue holding power while also plugging the mini-USB into the device

The computer should now recognize a device is plugged in within about 30 seconds. You will then see the Found New Hardware Wizard appear and be prompted how to install the necessary USB drivers. Choose No, not at this time, and select the option to install USB drivers automatically. When the USB driver installation is completed, choose Finish and the device should now be seen by the computer as a separate drive.

OK! Got it connected. Just not sure because I tried all boot suggestions without success. Then I tried be booting the computer... there's my Garmin. All the instructions talk about turning off thye Garmin but not the PC. Thanks for your help.
  • Glad it's resolved, note that the simple off/on of the PC resolves many issue with all sorts of software, not just Garmin, and most here would be doing that regularly anyway. Hadn't even occurred to me that you wouldn't have done that.
