Uploading routes from BC to Garmin Drive 50LM

I posted this on another forum and got no response. Hope someone can help me here.

I'm a new member. Just replaced my old Garmin with a drive 50 as it has Trip Planner. The reason is I go for motorbike rides with different groups and would like to lead others on the same ride or even take the ride solo again. But I can never remember the turns. (I am nearly 72 after all) My old Garmin could show me on Basecamp where I had been but I could not load that map back in to let it guide me again. I was assured that Trip Planner would allow this. So I bought the Drive 50. But do you think I can work it out? I have tried to follow a few Youtube videos and I am still stuck. I made a route around my local streets as a test and sent it to the Internal Storage of the GPS. It appeared in the Trip Planner menu and seemed to work ok. But it just took me to each destination where I had clicked on the map and then recalculated to the next click. As this took quite a few seconds I was already on the wrong track and, while I knew where my final destination was to be it insisted I go to each point I had clicked on. Totally not what I wanted. Can someone tell me if it can see that trip as one continuous journey with no way points and also at the start it would say the total distance and time of arrival eg. Hope I have explained it well. Any help would be appreciated and if you happen to live in Brisbane Australia a hands on demo would be even more appreciated. Also I want to know if I have wasted my money when my old Garmen was fine except it was a Nuvi 52LM and had no Trip Planner. Please don't tell me the Nuvi would have done what I wanted.
  • Well the good news is that your nuvi wouldn't have done what you want and your drive will :D

As for what's going wrong I can't really say from the information you've provided. Having created a route in BaseCamp and sent it to your drive it appears in Trip Planner. Select it and then select Go. You then get the option to choose where to go first from the various waypoints in the route, assuming you have at least two. Your drive should then navigate you along the whole route without any 'pauses' at the intermediate points.

Depending on what those intermediate points are will depend on whether your drive insists you visit them or can skip them. Intermediate points can either be via points (depicted by a flag in trip planner) or shaping points (depicted by an icon that looks like a circle with a line either side). They can be changed on the device by tapping the icons or set as such in Basecamp. Via points must be visited, shaping points can be skipped.

    Hello Sussamb
Thanks for the quick reply. I will be more specific. There are 2 things I want to do. First, if I go for a ride led by someone else I leave my satnav on (not with a destination, just on standby showing the roads I am on) When I get home I can connect it, either my new Drive 50 or the old Nuvi to Basecamp and I can see on the map where I have been. I can even play it back in Basecamp and it stops for lunch etc. Now, what I want to do is save that trip (route or adventure-- which is it?) then send it back to the Drive 50 and hopefully it will appear in Saved or Trip Planner and I can then be directed on that same journey as one trip. (No waypoints etc.) I have tried using the 'send to device' which looks like it is working but I am not sure what folder to send it to. I notice on one of the Youtube videos someone explaining this showed that after 'sending to device' he then went to the satnav and found a menu saying 'import and export' and he tapped 'import'. Mine does not have them in any menu. We will leave my second request till I get this one sorted. I thank you for your help but please be precise in your instructions. (I think I mentioned my age in the last post)
  • Not all devices need you to import routes, mainly the older ones. If you can send your route to your drive it will appear in Trip Manager. Just remember you must send it as a route. BaseCamp will also allow you to send tracks to your drive, but it cannot read tracks. Do not at this stage get involved with adventures!

When you do the send to there is no need to select any folders, you just send it to your device. Note whether or not it will include via points in addition to a start and finish I can't say as that will depend on what you've created.

    Hello Sussamb
You beauty!! (that's Aussi talk) I got it working. I clicked on 'new route' , clicked around a few streets and when I finished I hit 'escape' then the 'hand'. The street 'start and finish' was in the panel at the left so I could change its name if required. I then right clicked on that and went 'send to device'. Then I unplugged the Garmin and turned it on and there was the trip in 'Trip Planner'. I went for a ride and sure enough it took me from start to finish as one trip with no re-calculations. (When it reached each place I had clicked it just went straight on to the next.) Just what I was trying to achieve. Now for my other request. How do I send a route back to the Garmin that I have previously done? To be more precise, I go for a ride with the Garmin on but with no destination programmed. When I come home I plug it into Basecamp and see my trip in 'Active log' with the time and date. If I click on the 'Active log' I see the route I just took. How then do I send that back to appear in 'Trip Planner' as before? Sorry about being so pedantic in my explanations but this may help others reading this who know as little as me.
  • What you are sending from your GPS to BaseCamp is a Track not a Route. To make it navigable you need to convert it to a Route in BaseCamp.

Copy the track of the route you took into BaseCamp. Right click it and select Create route from selected track. Send that route to your Drive as before.

To make it navigable you need to convert it to a Route in BaseCamp.

I just went for a 10km ride with the Garmin on but with no destination. After 10km I set it for HOME and came home. Then I connected it to Basecamp and the last Active Log was my journey to home and the second last Active Log was my journey out. So far so good. Now, how do I convert those Active logs to Routes. If I could do that I would be ok as I can now successfully sent a Route to the Garmin. Can you please be specific as I have tried right clicking etc and no-where can I see anything to convert it to a Route. When I click the Active log I get a dialog box with all the locations I have been a few seconds apart, in this case about 100 for each Log. That box has Create Adventure but Create Route is greyed out. Thanks for your help so far.
