Exporting Track data to a text file

I contacted Garmin support about how to export track data to a text file.

They said it was not possible and suggested using third party software to so this.

Can anyone suggest a way to do this?

Basecamp allows exporting in six different formats, as selected in the "Save as Type" list box. Four of these are text files.

The GPX, TCX formats are structured text files with tag delimiters, similar to the HTML files used for web pages.

The CSV has fields separated by commas.

The TXT format has fields separated by tabs.

Garmin support can sometimes be less than helpful.
  • The summary data is hard to get. It may be present in a gpx file from your device. Distance/elevation will be in meters, time in seconds and speeds in m/s. The data below the summary could be captured in older versions by clicking on any point, then ctrl-a to select all the points. They can then be copied and pasted into a text document or Excel.

When exporting as CSV or TXT it does not export track statistics such as distance and elevation.

I tried to attach the txt and CSV files but they had a red ! next to them and would not upload.
    Thanks,

  • The Summay data only exists for track logs on some devices. If you do not edit the track, the summary data should still be in an exported gpx file from BaseCamp. The file can be viewed with any text editor, such as NotePad. As mentioned above, the units will always be meters for distance and elevation, seconds for time and meters/sec for speed. It will be located before the beginning of the track points in the gpx file.

Edited tracks or tracks created in BaseCamp will not have this data.

The summary data is based on the trip computer, which logs points every second. If you log tracks at some other interval, the summary data will not agree with the logged data. You can verify this yourself simply by deleting a single point. Or, if you want to keep all the log points, you can divide the track, then rejoin it.

I was hoping for some way of getting all the elevation/distance data with having to manually extract it from the GPX file.

The summary data is based on the trip computer, which logs points every second.

My eTouch 35 allows the user to set the track interval. Are you saying I will not get accurate data if I do not have the tracking set for 1 second intervals?

    Thanks for the detailed reply.
