I have a new 64s and can not for the life me get it to import waypoints or routes into mapsource. I also can not figure out how to have it not turn off after unhooking the usb cable. with my 60csx I could turn off the option to have it shutting down after disconnecting. I also had the choice of mass storage or usb device. I imagine it is something like that with 64s.

when I receive from device in mapsource the only thing it receives is the track log, it does not receive waypoints or routes even though I have them selected to download.

any help is greatly appreciated!
  • Newer devices work differently and MapSource won't fully integrate with them. Your best bet is to start using BaseCamp.
  • As mentioned above, you will probably want to start migrating to BaseCamp. But you should do it slowly. These are different applications and it will take some adjustment.

In the mean time, tracks etc can be directly copied between BaseCamp and MapSource. So, you can download to BaseCamp and then copy to MapSource and save as you learn to use BaseCamp. You may have to transfer to your device by doing the reverse or by directly copying gpx files to the proper location on the device. But if you absolutely refuse to learn BaseCamp…

My guess is that the file structure on newer devices differs from older ones or saved objects are of a different file type. This is why the download fails. You should attach your device to your computer with the device turned off. This will cause it to be treated as an external storage device.

From MapSource saved data on the device can be accessed using the Open command. The device will show up under My Computer as removable storage. You will want the one labeled as Garmin. You will then need to open the sub folder gpx with in the Garmin folder on the Garmin drive. Saved tracks, routes and waypoints will be here although the file names may be obscure (i.e. different from the object name stored in the file). The active track log will be in the Current sub folder.

MapSource will only access one file at a time. So, if you want multiple items in the same file, you will have to open MapSource twice. Use one to open files on the device and then copy and paste it to the second MapSource to combine objects for saving.

Some devices do not save calculated routes created on the device; they only save the user entered points. I am not sure what will happen when this is read into MapSource via the Open command. You may need to recalculate it. If so, you should check to see that route on your device matches the recalculated route in MapSource.

Personally, I would download/upload using BaseCamp, then copy and paste to/from MapSource while learning to use BaseCamp.

Your device should be disconnected using the Safely Remove Hardware feature in Windows. It should not be on after it disconnects.
