Issues when Ejecting Montana 600 from BaseCamp/PC

I currently have a Montana 600.

When I plug it into my PC the Garmin USB screen comes up and all works as it should. I can transfer to and from etc to the device and edit my tracks or way points as I like.

When I go to eject to the device I am doing this first in Base camp, and I get the message that Base camp is finished with the device. I then eject it from the PC and I get the message safe to eject device as well. When I unplug the GPS the USB screen/symbol stays up on the GPS screen. I have tried to power up the unit and it will not work. The only way I have been able to get rid of this symbol is by removing the battery and putting it back in, then the GPS works as normal. This happens everytime.

This may be more of an issue with the GPS then Base camp but I was not sure where to post this as I could not see a specific section for the Montana. Mods if I posted in the wrong area feel free to move to the correct area.

Anyone have any advice on this issue?
  • There is no device specific forum. I've not had an issue ejecting my Montana, but I always close BaseCamp first. If you do that do you still get the same problem?
  • There is a thread over on the Montana Wiki about this: http://garminmontanagpsr.wikispaces.com/share/view/80368684
I have the last post over there but I can't seem to completely reproduce the problem. The unit will stay in Mass Storage Mode after ejecting but I can recover if I pull the USB cable and cycle the power switch.
I can't image what would be different in my setup. I've never tried to back rev firmware but it may be interesting to try it and see if the problem is truly with 7.10.
  • Thanks DaveA, I just made a post over there as well

I have tried with leaving Base Camp open, and I have tired with it closed no difference.

This problem developed last week to me with my Montana 600. I ben using my setup for more then one year and this problem suddenly showed up. If I re plug the USB cable Montana exits USB mode and powers up. Solution to this problem is to use ORIGINAL USB CABLE supplied with Montana. I used cable 12 inches longer to accommodate my setup. I spent good couple of hours playing around with USB ports and different cables and it comes back to the same. Use the cable supplied by Garmin.

You have to Eject the SD card first, and then Gps from eject hardware on pc. If that doesn’t work try new cable.

  • It's a known issue with 7.10 firmware, hopefully an update will fix it.

Having the same problem with my brand new Montana 680.
    Some additional info:
    - firmware 2.60 (at this moment the latest to my knowledge)
    - not using the original Garmin USB cable on Windows 7 PC => eject problem occurs
    - using the original Garmin USB cable on Windows 7 PC => NO eject problem
    - not using the original Garmin USB cable on Windows 10 PC => NO eject problem
    - charging it with the original power supply and original cable => NO "eject" problem
    - charging it with an other brand power supply and other brand USB cable => "eject" problem occurs

Can this be fixed in a next firmware update? Don't always have the original power supply / cable by hand.
  • This is simply due to the wrong cable being used, not all cables are equal, so a software change won't help.

I have found that while waiting for firmware fix, Montana can be ejected 100% of the time successfully by simply ejecting the SD card part first, and then 5 sec. later the Montana itself.
