Multiple day route and own POIs

I have been struggling for some time to use Basecamp to produce routes lasting more than one day and using my own POIs. I have tried setting a start date and number of days for the route, then entering the start point and the final destination and number of hours driving per day. I then need to be able to add a succesion of POIs to the route, but it won't automatically recalculate each day, nor can I seem to do this manually.

My second problem is inputing the POIs. I have tried taking the base file (.csv), converting it to .gpx and importing them into "My Collection", but then how do I use them in my route? Alternatively I have tried copying the Garmin folder from my Nuvi 2597LM onto a memory stick on my PC but the POIs don't then show up in the "Maps" drop down menu.

Can anyone help, please?
  • No but there is information here

Personally I prefer just to create separate routes in BaseCamp for each day or leg of a trip, I found Trip Planner too complicated to use and way more than I needed.

I don't plan far enough ahead or have enough patience to use BaseCamp for Road routing. But creating Custom Waypoints in BaseCamp and exporting them to a Nuvi with Trip Planner could be helpful for use along the way. For my usage, the standalone Nuvi Trip Planner's layover and stopover time shifting features are adequate.
  • Just a note for anyone reading the posts above, the Trip Planner in BaseCamp is not the same as the Trip Planner app on the nuvis. You don't need to use the BaseCamp Trip Planner to send trips to your nuvi either. Just create routes in BaseCamp, send them to your nuvi and they will appear in the Trip Planner app on the nuvi. Why Garmin called the two the same I don't know as it is misleading for some.

Thanks Sussamb. I would also note that importing a route with included labeled or pre-numbered waypoints may result in some confusion, thinning, and re-ordering in BaseCamp. Or at least this happened with my first simple 15 point gpx test route a "couple" of years ago. Somehow I kicked in a BaseCamp alpha-numerical point thinning and resorting algorithm that created a route quite different from the original. This resorting might be not so bad for a long straight line highway route, but it did not work with small town meandering.

Thanks Sussamb. For your information, the link https://garminbasecamp.wikispaces.com/Trip+Planner no longer works - the originators subscription has expired. I need to use the Garmin Trip Planner as I do not know, when I start to plan a trip, where I will be stopping each night. I will persevere and see how I can work round it.

If a user who needs dozens or hundreds of sequential points in a multi-day route were to create a Basecamp route without using the computer based timed Trip Planning, editing in in a Nuvi device should be easier. As the Nuvi will assign subset routes of 29 points maximum, including redundant user created points for possible "Change' in the device will ease the editing burden. Time shifts by day or hour can be created in the device as required.
