Changing Map Symbols

Within My Collection, the symbol used to display all waypoints on the map is a green flag. Since I already have about 50 waypoints and 20 routes, my map look pretty congested.

I prefer the small green dots instead of the big flags, but I hate to have to change waypoint symbols one at a time. Is there a way to collectively change all of these waypoint symbols from flags to dots?

Thanks in advance.
  • My collection includes everything in all folders/lists, so if you delete them there they will go from everywhere. In Lists you have two options; Remove from list (in which case it does what it says, removes from that list. Data will remain in any other list, or if in only one list it will appear in the Unlisted data list) or Delete (this deletes from everywhere).

Bear in mind BaseCamp is a database. When you see something in My collection, or any folder/list, it is simply a pointer to the data. Organising your folders/lists is part of the strength of BaseCamp, once of course you understand how to do it.

    @durango,

Your screenshot has two limitations for troubleshooting from afar. :-)

First, it doesn't capture any of the Basecamp info, like specifically which list (or My Collection) is selected.

Second, it's not zoomed close enough to see the labels on the things that are being displayed.

My guess, and it's only a guess but based on a wee bit of testing I just did, is that you have My Collection selected. Further, if you zoom in you should see there are two labels, probably nearly overlapping each other, on each of the offending points. One label will match the item with the dot and the other the item with the flag. They might even be the same label except one will be clean and the other will have a digit appended, eg. ThisLabel and ThisLabel1, or something like that.

If I'm wrong, I apologize. I did not completely duplicate what you did. I just hacked something together that forced the overlapping dot and flag and that's what I ended up with.

@ SUSSAMB - Truth is, I don't fully understand databases. You suggested that I split my waypoints out into a separate list without really telling me how to do that. So when I did it as best I could, the waypoints did go to a 2nd list but they also remained in My Collection. I thought this waypoint duplication was not correct, but I wasn't sure what to do about it. Still don't.........

@ Ken, you are absolutely correct. I did have My Collection selected. And I do have two (or more) labels for just about every waypoint, e.g., I have a Home1, Home2,..,Home12. This is because my original Home waypoint is used in 12 routes, so BaseCamp appended the numbers. Another example.....my son's house in Texas. Since I have a route to and from his house, BaseCamp gave me SonHouse1 and SonHouse2.

I described this issue and sought answers in this thread:
    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?363510-Strange-Waypoint-Notations-in-Basecamp

It's probably pretty obvious by now that I don't understand the database nature of BaseCamp (as SUSSAMB will attest to but has been patient with me). I used MapSource for years on several Garmins and I don't ever remember encountering these types of issues. I would probably be better off setting my 2789 to mass storage mode and using MapSource again.

Thanks to you both for your responses.

My collection is the sum of all lists and folders so if you have My collection selected you will see everything. You're not seeing a waypoint duplication, just a duplication of pointers pointing at one piece of data. You can put those pointers in as many folders/lists as you want. What you can't do is then create another waypoint with the same name.

Try creating Folders/lists and just some gash data. Play around with it. Once you do you'll soon see how it all works.

In My collection I have 6 Folders, some containing other folders. For example I have a holiday folder. In it I have Folders for each year and in those folders I have Countries. In the Country folders I have lists. Some of the data is shared between the various Years/Countries ... and in My collection I have over 600 pieces of data. Without Folders/Lists I'd be lost!

@Sussamb I do not understand databases either, but are you saying that all Basecamp data is keyed to a specific coordinate rounded to a certain lat/lon values? If so, is the data in the Nuvi "waypoints" keyed to specific addresses +/- 2 digits in the building number? Or is the data in the Nuvi keyed to a rounded lat/lon coordinate value derived from the building numbers in a manner similar to Basecamp?. If the latter, are saved locations in the Nuvi subject to modification if a different street map is used? Thanks.
  • I wasn't saying anything about BaseCamp data and coordinates

However with your nuvi (and as far as I'm aware) if you input an address derived from a map database that waypoint (if you save it)is stored by the nuvi as a location, not as an address. It's why when you update your maps you occasionally have to recalculate the route, as the 'point' isn't exactly on a road if the map has shifted it slightly.

I do appreciate you linking that video, which I watched twice. Wow, that was a lot of data. Unfortunately, Mr. Leese seemed more intent with showing off all his folders, lists, sub lists, and congested routes/maps. I wish he had started with no lists and then showed us how to create waypoints, routes and lists (including embedded lists). Instead, he just sorta overwhelmed me with the vastness of his data base. He showed me what he had built instead of showing me how to build it.

But bottom line, BaseCamp is just a planning tool. What does he do when he is ready to take a trip? Does he just download that particular route to his GPS? Surely all that data is not also on his GPS.

I don't travel much anymore, but I did successfully use BaseCamp to create all my waypoints (50) and routes (28). Then I just downloaded all this data to my GPS, which worked great on the few trips I have taken thus far. I even added one more route on my GPS using Trip Planner.

Thanks again for trying to educate me on BaseCamp. Sadly, I guess I'm just not ready for primetime, because at this point it is all very confusing. The only lists I truly understand are 'My Collection' and 'Data Received from Nuvi 2789'.

I suspect so, that's what I do. For all my holidays and multi-day walks I plan in BaseCamp, install to my Garmin when the planning is done and it's time for the trip. For day to day stuff I just enter it straight into my Garmin.

You may have missed it but he did describe how to create a folder/list ...
  • Multiple icons

When I sometimes end up with two symbols on top of each other, I do the following to see what they both are:

Use the Arrow tool to draw a box around the symbols. This will select both symbols. Scroll the list at the left and the symbols will be selected in the list, too. Open each one up and look at the References tab. This will show you in which list(s) they appear. It sounds like you have duplicated waypoints with a flag symbol in one list and dots in another list. When you have My Collection selected, it shows everything from all your lists. Usually, I only work with one list at a time. If you select just the one list you just created, the map would only show the items that were in that one list.

    Batch POI symbol change

Yes, select them all then right click the selection and choose open ... Now change the symbol to what you want.

Hello, I tried this with 10 or so POI's and it worked fine. It locked up when trying to convert 14,000 POI's to a yellow happy face symbol. Humm? McDonald's has about 30,000 locations that I would like to change to smaller yellow dots rather that the "blue flag."

    Any suggestions?

Originally I imported the file into Microsoft Streets and Trips 2013, assigned yellow dots for symbols, exported the file as GPX format, the imported the file to BaceCamp. For some reason BaceCamp changed the icon symbols to blue flags.
