Changing Map Symbols

Within My Collection, the symbol used to display all waypoints on the map is a green flag. Since I already have about 50 waypoints and 20 routes, my map look pretty congested.

I prefer the small green dots instead of the big flags, but I hate to have to change waypoint symbols one at a time. Is there a way to collectively change all of these waypoint symbols from flags to dots?

Thanks in advance.

Ive had some luck doing this to upload a .jpg:

Thanks much, I thought I also tried that, but will try it again later today.....will be away from the house most of the day.

@ John - Yes, the blue flags are the waypoints. It's when I look at my map that I see the green dots within the flag symbol. So I don't understand how separate lists will help, but I will try that.

@SUSSAMB - Still not sure why you need to see my map with green dots inside the waypoint flags, as I would think my description would suffice (i.e., waypoint flag with green dot inside). And/how the green dots appeared is explained in a previous post within this thread.

But per your request, I am trying to upload a simple 48KB JPG file for you to see. And IMHO, I should not have to use Dropbox or any other 3rd party utility to attach a small file. In most forums it is easy to attach a file, but not in this forum......yet you provide me no help except to go use Dropbox. Why won't it work in this forum for which you are the moderator?
  • No idea why you can't upload your file, I haven't had an issue. Indeed I've just tried to attach one and it's worked perfectly. As for responsibilities, you'll need to ask Admin why it's not happening for you, mods have no control over it.

Separate lists will help as it may determine what is causing what. If you don't see the blue flags when you just have your waypoints with the green dots in a separate list we'll know the waypoints aren't the issue. I know you've described it but while that helps a picture paints a thousand words (so it's said).
  • When I saw durango's upload issue I decided to try it to see what happens. For reference, I have not had problems in the past but it has been a very long time since I uploaded anything.

I tried the normal approach via the Manage Attachments dialog and it failed, as durango already mentioned. There were no clues as to why. I tried multiple files with multiple graphics types with no success. None were more than 100KB.

Next I selected the Basic Uploader from the Manage Attachments window and that provided the answer. This time when the upload failed the Basic Uploader popped an error window that said I had exceeded my upload quota. (??) And it told me by how much I had exceeded it. When I subtracted that amount from the size of the file I was trying to upload it worked out to 24KB was the maximum file size I can upload.

Sure enough when I reduced the size of a JPG file to 24KB it uploaded just fine. Anything even 1KB larger fails.

    - What's an "upload quota" and how do we find out what ours is without forcing an upload failure?
    - Why is mine so tiny compared to yours and others??
    - How does it get fixed to something sensible?
    - How does one actually contact an "Admin"?

  • As Durango hadn't tried posting an attachment before I'd be surprised if the limit was the issue, as he said his file was 48kb (max jpg size is 2Mb), but in your case it clearly is. I have no idea why the overall limit is so small, must confess whenever I post a screenshot I do it via a link to an image hosted somewhere, and had forgotten how small the limit is. I think in the past Admin have done something when you hit your limit, so perhaps you could ask ... send a pm to tri.jands

@ Ken & rkruz2 - Thanks for the suggestion to try file uploader. I will now go away and try that.

@SUSSAMB - I agree that a picture sometimes paints a thousand words, so I am going to try again to upload my file using file loader. Fingers crossed.

Well, I see my file below under Manage Attachments, so hopefully this time it worked.
  • Yep that worked :)

Looking at it seems like everything is in one folder so I'd try the suggestion to split the waypoints out into a separate list. It's just that your waypoints clash with some other symbols, as well as the blue flags there's also apparently an airfield with a green symbol in it ;)

I can duplicate it if I have two waypoint symbols close together, so it's definitely that.

I prefer to upload images directly for inclusion, on those rare occasions that I need to. I take the long view of forum posts so I generally prefer not to use links to personal external images because it means I have to remember that some images, and which ones, are attached to forum posts whenever I go through my occasional bursts of cleanup activity. My memory isn't that good any more. :-)

I've PMed the admin as you suggested. Thanks.

@ SUSSAMB - Yes, as I stated at the beginning of my thread, everything was in My Collection. Therein, the symbol used to display all waypoints on the map was a green flag. Since I had about 50 waypoints and 20 routes, my map looked pretty congested. You told me how to change all the flags to small green dots. Thereafter, everything looked good in My Collections.....I had green dots instead of flags. But when I went to the map, I saw dots inside of flags.

OK, then I was advised to split the waypoints out into a separate list. So I did this.....I sent all the waypoints to a new list called Waypoints using the 'Send to' command. Sure enough, the map associated with this Waypoint list showed only green dots. However, the waypoints were still present in My Collection. So then I thought maybe I should delete the waypoints from My Collection to avoid duplication (i.e., waypoints appearing in My Collection and in Waypoints list).

But when I went to delete the waypoints from My Collection, it said they would be deleted from ALL lists. So I stopped at that point....a little confused. Now I sorta wish I had kept my original flags instead of mucking things up as it appears I have done.

    Any suggestions/advice at this point?
