FYI the CN NA NT 2017.30 maps do NOT work in MapSource 6.15.11 (on Win2K SP4). Selecting them crashes MS.

They DO however operate fine in MapSource 6.16.3 (Win7 SP1 x64).

PS: 6.15,11 crashed due to the lack of a CNNANT_2017_30_mdr\CNNANT_2.MDR file. I copied the one from the 2017.20 maps and MS no longer crashes. I don't know if this file isn't present in 2017.30 for some reason or I didn't get it. I will get the maps again and see.

PPS: I didn't get the file for some reason. Got it now and all is fine.
  • Stuart, is there some reason you're still using MS 6.15.11?

    The short answer.

    Because it works.

    The longer answer.

I have rather a peculiar view when it comes to software. If it continues to work and does what I need I continue to use it unless something better comes along. Just because it is no longer supported I don't consider it "broken" and refuse to use it.

When it comes to Garmin software I prefer (for reasons I've posted about many times) MapSource to BaseCamp. I rarely use the latter.

When Microsoft discontinued support for Windows 2000 in July 2010 strangely enough my Win2K box did not burst into flames. In fact it continued to function
just fine. When Garmin stopped supporting MapSource on Win2K after 6.15.11 that also continued to work without issues.

To put it another way, I've gotten off the "I have to have and use the very latest version of all software" bandwagon. Newer isn't necessarily better.
  • Stuart, I completely understand the basecamp vs mapsource conundrum. I agree, even in its current iteration, BC is trash.

My query was more related more so to using the older version (6.15.11) of MS instead of the more recent (6.16.3).

I still use 6.13.6 (or .7) on a tablet only because it runs faster than the more current version.

6.15.11 is the latest release to work on Win2K, I use 6.16.3 on my Win7 box. I copy GDB files between machines for backup purposes.

I do map installation (PC and devices) manually. I copy device IMG files and .gmap folders between machines as well.

In short I'm a "dinosaur" or to put it another way someone who knows how stuff works under the hood. I'm not a typical Garmin user.

PS: I posted in this thread yesterday because I wanted to warn people like me. As it turned out I was incorrect. That said I fully expect maps to stop working in MapSource at some point.

Well you're entitled to your opinion but for those of us who made the switch I find MapSource clunky and far less capable than BaseCamp, however as Stuart says if it continues to do what you want then there is no need to move away from MapSource. For me it doesn't work.
