Choice of maps to load

I realise this is only partially related to basecamp usage, but ..

I have just bought an Edge 810 cycle unit, because I got fed up with the GPS 64 falling off the mount on rough ground. The edge did not come preloaded with any maps.

I want to be able to use OS GB maps for occasional off road riding, so obviously need to buy a copy of this. However, I suspect I can't use this on its own and have road routes planned which follow the roads (I seem to remember comments that OS maps follow the also preloaded (on the GPS64) City Navigator Europe NTU), but would have to use direct routing.

Is this true? If so, do I have to buy another copy of this, (or the cheaper GB & Ireland only version) to underly it?

Thanks
  • If you buy Garmin's OS mapping they come with an underlying road map based on Garmin's City navigator maps so will route along roads. The OS map itself isn't routeable so for cross country routes you need to use direct routing.

However you might be better off trying some of the many free OSM maps out there.
