Route Creation Problem using Ordnance Survey Mapping in Basecamp

Hello,

I'd be very grateful if anyone could provide a definitive answer to the following problem that my sister is having using Basecamp with her newly acquired Montana 610.

Within Basecamp, with Hiking selected as the activity, and Lock to Road set to "off" in set-up on the device.
The Montana has complete GB Ordnance Survey Discoverer 1:50K mapping on Micro SD card, and selected areas of 1:25K Ordnance Survey Explorer mapping (downloaded via Birdseye Select).

When creating a route for a proposed cross county hike of several miles in length, (and although all the points clicked on when creating the route are following footpaths across open hillside terrain), the finished route appears as a combination of the "clicked on" points, and numerous other points on nearby roads - even though no points on roads were originally clicked on. (And Lock to Road is switched off in settings).

The device also gives an error message/beep saying that a maximum of fifty points are allowed when plotting road routes???

In comparison, when a track is recorded, only the exact path of the actual walk taken is shown (with no spurious road "points" included).
That, in effect, is what is wanted here - but as a route to be walked, and not a track that already has been walked.

I've read that route plotting is classed as turn by turn navigation and may not work correctly with the Ordnance Survey mapping as available from Garmin as those maps are, in effect just jpg raster images.

Is it therefore the situation that route planning/plotting can only be used when the intended route is on recognised roads?
Or, is it actually possible to set up Basecamp/The Montana such that cross country routes will show up exactly as plotted, without including these unwanted "extra" points on nearby roads?

Any replies will be much appreciated.

What is happening is normal, and is due to the fact that the OS map isn't itself routeable but underlying it is Garmin's normal road map. This allows you to navigate on road should you wish. In planning walking routes in BaseCamp you need to select the Direct activity and when you send those routes to the Montana ensure it too is set to the Direct or Off Road profile.

It was not at all obvious from reading the Montana user manual and using Basecamp's help function. :o

But if setting Basecamp and the Montana itself to direct routing will stop these extra "on road" points from appearing when creating "cross country" routes, that is exactly what is wanted. - Much appreciated.

Well the issue is the map rather than BaseCamp or the Montana. However I'm glad you're all sorted :)

This "Direct routing to first waypoint, but then follow nearest road on map, however far away" issue did not resolve itself on my Nuvi 56 with original firmware. However, direct off road routing of multiple points now works without bouncing back and forth to the nearest available roads on the installed map.

I know of no reason for the change in operation except that the device may have received a Garmin firmware update on one of the rare occasions in which I plugged the device into a computer USB port while on the Internet. Perhaps this update is not available for all devices.
