BC hangs when calculating routes

I seem to have an issue with BC and my eTrex 30.

I am using the UK & Ireland Topo maps. I am just trying to create a route using 'New Route'. When I click it, if I follow a path/road, it all works fine, but as soon as I go off road, and BC needs to "calculate" the route, it simply gives me a loading bar wherein it hangs at about 45% into the process.

Is there anyway to just override this calculation, and force BC to place the route where I want it? I let it run for 10mins or so each time, and nothing happens. Is there some issue?

Thanks in advance!
  • Topo maps aren't routeable, so you need to ensure you're using the direct profile in BaseCamp.

You always say that. I guess it's time someone called you on it. SOME topo maps are partially routable, usually on main thoroughfares.

A shining example is Backroads Mapbook. It not only routes on roads but also on many trails.

I haven't used Topo Canada in a while but as I recall it has roughly the same routing data as a decent basemap. I apologize if I've misremembered this one. I'm not where I can double check at the moment.

    ...ken...
  • You're correct of course. I meant to say that the OPs topo map isn't routeable. I too have some topo maps that are :)

However having now checked the OPs map does indeed seem to be routeable, my apologies. My excuse is that I've been on holiday and only had time to dash in occasionally :(

Equally in the past Garmins topo maps of the UK haven't been routeable but now they're beginning to supply some based on OSM mapping, like the OPs, that is routeable.
As he hasn't returned its difficult to help him, and as I don't have access to his map all I can think of that he's choosing a part of the map that can't be routed to.
