Can't export trips from Bascamp to Garmin Drive 60

I have recently purchased a Garmin Drive 60 which came with the Europe Map installed. I subsequently purchased the map of New Zealand on SD card.

When connecting the Drive 60 to the computer and running Basecamp both maps appear and I can select between the two. If I select the New Zealand map I can create a multi-day trip in the trip planner which I can tinker with to my heart's content. I can then select that trip and send it to the Drive 60 and with Windows Explorer open I can see the individual routes being created in the Garmin/GPX folder on the SD card. Basecamp confirms that the routes are in the User Data on the memory card HOWEVER when I disconnect the Drive 60 switch it on and select Where To? and then Trip Planner it says 'No trips are available'.

I have tried everything I can think of - sending the files to Internal Storage instead of the Memory card, sending individual routes, dragging and dropping in Basecamp, transferring routes with Windows Explorer - all to no avail. The answer is always 'No trips are available'.

I can create a route on the Drive 60 itself and save it as a Trip which will then show up but I cannot seem to create anything in Basecamp and send it to the Drive 60 (the files are always transferred but never show up in the Trip Planner). This is driving me nuts!! Am I missing something blindingly obvious?

One possibility -

Do I need to switch maps on the Drive 60 - if so how? (probably not the answer as I can't send Europe routes either)

Please someone tell me I haven't wasted £160 on a piece of crap hardware and further (exorbitant) £100+ on a useless map.

Perhaps the Drive 60 is a generation ahead of BaseCamp in labeling "Destinations" and "Shape Points", etc. by some newer naming scheme. Is it possible to use a text editor to view the internal memory "Current" file of a route created on the device to see if a new naming scheme (or possibly language scheme) has been used in gpx route file extensions.
  • Try shutting the unit down entirely - hold the power button until it asks if you want to power off.

Turn it back on and open trip planner, it should be processing/importing the routes.

If that doesn't work, manually rename the file name in \garmin\gpx to something else and try again. Make sure it filename has a .gpx extension.

Trip planner is strange like that. They should give the user an option to manually rescan/import route files rather than relying on some automated scan.

    Thanks for trying to help

Thanks for the replies. I solved the problem the easy way by buying a New Zealand map for my TomTom which, luckily, I had not sold. It took me 6 minutes to download the map and less than a minute to transfer 37 days routes. Compare that to the 20+ hours I have spent messing about with the Garmin.

Thanks to das1996 I somehow finally managed to get the routes onto the Garmin by renaming the files. They are there but in a stupid order which I can't now change. I eventually got the routes to load by renaming all the route.gpx, routes0.gpx etc. files and deleting all the track.gpx and waypoints.gpx files but I don't think this is the actual answer to the problm. Read on.

After far too many hours I have worked out that what happens is that the Garmin reads (or rather should read) the SD card and copies any .gpx files it finds to a database in its internal memory. When you switch it on it should read the SD card (and the internal GPX folder) to check for files there. If it finds files it has already imported then it will ignore them which is why das1996's renaming trick works (it thinks it's a new file). Trouble is my unit doesn't do that every time it is switched on, it seems to do it sporadically. I must have rebooted it 100 times before it finally picked up the files I have put on the SD card. I have come to the conclusion that the software in the unit is corrupted or that the hardware doesn't properly (or fully) load the software. Either way it seems that I have a faulty unit and, of course there is now no chance of getting a repair before I leave for holiday. I will take the Garmin with me but I have no idea if it will work when I get on the road so I will be taking the TomTom as well.

My impression of the Garmin Drive 60 so far is that it is a piece of garbage and this is reinforced by Garmin's so-called customer service. I raised the problem with their support (explaining the problem in minute detail) and all they have done so far is to cut and paste the page from their FAQ's that tells you how to find the Trip Planner on every single unit. They couldn't even be bothered to cut and paste the section specific to the Drive 60!

I feel like I have wasted over £250 with no chance of a refund now. The unit will go back to Garmin after I return from New Zealand but I reckon it's going to be a nightmare getting any sort of repair done.

At least I have discovered a company that can compete with PC World for the coveted 'poorest customer Service in The World' award .
  • It's possible you have a faulty unit. I've used Garmins for years and never had any issues transferring routes/trips to them from BaseCamp. Hope your trip goes well ;)
  • I have this same problem; Create the route in basecamp, transfer to the Drive 61 (I can see the gpx file is there). It does not show up in the trip planner

  • Confirm you are sending a route and not a track, as your Drive cannot read tracks even though BaseCamp can send them, so you'll see the file but it won't be read.
