How to find a small town, lake or place?

Apparently, BC cannot find a place such as Lake Tahoe, Lake Louise, etc. Is this true?
BaseCamp will find places all around Lake Tahoe, but not the lake itself. Am I not using BC correctly?

Here are two places that were found immediately in Streets & Trips, but I cannot for the life of me find them on BaseCamp or even on my GPS
:: Sanchez, Arizona
:: Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area

Can the above two locations be located using the Garmin products?
  • All that depends on the map. BaseCamp can only find things that are on the map.

But not places. . .unless I'm doing it wrong. Lake Tahoe, Great Salt Lake, Lake Powell can all be seen on the BC map but I can't make them be found through search (yet).

Both Sanchez and Gila Box show up in a search when using either TopoUSA 100K or the Arizona state 24k map from GPSFiledepot (not a Garmin product, but free). Neither showed up in CNNA 2016. That's why I have about 10 different maps in BC.

Okay, so it's not just me. Are those maps that mentioned able to be imported into BaseMap?

Yes, no problem. Go to GPSFileDepot.com and look around for your state or others.....free.

There are often things that you can see on a map that aren't searchable, routeable etc. Hopefully now you've found a map suitable for your needs.

As Rocky_TFS says if you want to try to cover all bases have a number of maps available, like him I have around 10 maps available through BaseCamp.
  • Supplement BS with Google Maps

One option to find locations with Basecamp in order to include in route planning is the following:
    • locate the site using Google Maps,
    • copy the Lat/Lon coordinates that appear in Google Maps address window,
    • 32.8688688,-109.5489815,14 for Sanchez; 32.9369305,-109.5258707 for Gila Box; 39.0929981,-120.3258561 for the center of Lake Tahoe.
    • In Basecamp, go to Find/Locate Coordinates and paste the Lat/Lon in to the "Center At:" window and select "create waypoint".
    • Sanchez and Gila Box will now appear as a waypoint in Basecamp and you can use the waypoint or locate points around it in your route planning (e.g. to avoid riding into the lake:))

No doubt the address and POI data base and the search methodologies for BC are weak.
Google shows Sanchez, AZ is a ghost town. Last Post Office was there in 1903. So not surprising it was missed.
Gila Box, an active national conservation area should have been found by Basecamp.
Lake Tahoe!!?? OMG how could BC miss that!
I often divert routes based on points of interest some found by Basecamp search but it by no means is comprehensive so being supplemented with Google search and ability to grab GPS coordinates from Google makes the two together pretty powerful.
Nothing Ive tried provides the capability to detail a route like Basecamp and then transfer that route to my Garmin GPS for turn by turn directions (for me primarily for planning motorcycle adventures).
For examples, Search rkruz2 in Adventures and you will see some of the routes I have published. "Beautiful North Texas" is a good example.

At this point I'm finding Google Maps is much better for finding and PLANNING routes than base camp.
(Even so, Google is useless when I'm in the boonies without internet!)
I've reached a point in Google where it stores all my maps in it's MY MAPS area.
After locating and adding destinations in the Google Map, the route can be exported as either a KLM or KMZ file.
The KLM or KMZ file can then be imported into BaseCamp as a "track".

I do not yet understand the differences between a "track" and a "route" in BaseCamp.
  • There are numerous differences but the most important for you is that a track cannot be read by most auto devices, so be sure to send routes and not tracks to it :)

Okay, that was very helpful! Thank you.
I was sending the track to the GPS device. It didn't work.
After right clicking on the track in BC and converting it to a "route" and then sending the route to the GPS unit, it works!
