No such thing as a "Valid JNX file"

I just got my brand new eTrex 20x yesterday, and a subscription to Birdseye Topo U.S & Canada. At first I created six Birdseye files and transferred them to the sdcard in my device with Basecamp. I get "Invalid JNX File" error. After a couple of hours of frustration, I deleted all Birdseye files from both the device, and Basecamp, and I am concentrating on just one Birdseye file. My 20x shows up in the Birdseye wizard, and my subscription is valid for 364 more days, but I have yet to create a valid file. I have tried both the internal storage and the external storage options. My tracks, routes, etc work from the sdcard, so I do not think it is a format issue, I have a 16 gb card. I checked the box to automatically transfer the file, and did not get the error, but the file was not transferred. I am selecting area's about 4-6 miles square. I have tried right clicking send to..., and dragging them to the top pane as well as the auto transfer method with no luck. I always safely remove the device in Windoze (I have a fresh install of Win 10).
Are the Birdseye files supposed to show up as maps on the device? I have yet to see it work so I don't know. I'm not sure if I have a faulty device, a problem with Basecamp (newest version), the alignment of the planets, or a problem with Win 10. I get no software errors on the computer and the area I select fills with the imagery, but fails when put on the handheld.
I have tried all of the suggestions I could find in the forums, and watched all of the video tutorials as well. I think I am doing it right, but can't make a valid JNX file. I am keeping my feelings about this matter to myself, and I hope someone can help me sort this out. Hint -->
  • Let's take this in stages. Are you able to download a BirdsEye file so that it displays in BaseCamp?

    Yes

the area I select fills with the imagery, (in Basecamp) but fails when put on the handheld. The Birdseye file is created in My Collection, and shows up on the device after transfer. Then it is always Invalid, every time. Has not worked yet in over 20 tries.

    Something new, same result

This time I created a new database in Basecamp before attempting to create a valid JNX file. I used only the base map in Basecamp as well. The area filled with imagery and the Birdseye file was created. I checked the box to auto transfer the file. It shows up on the device in internal storage but after disconnecting it disappears. Connected the device again and the JNX file is not there. Verified with Win Explorer. Transfered to device using right click, Send to..., invalid once again. Has yet to work for me. And let me add, thanks for your help.
  • So, in BaseCamp you can see the map and the appropriate icon in My collection or any other folder/list you've placed it in?

If you drag/drop it into your Etrex in BaseCamp does it then show in the Etrex folder and does it display in BaseCamp if you select it?

Correct. I've tried both internal and external on the device. It shows up in Basecamp when I click on it. Sometimes I drag it or I use the right click menu. Same result, Invalid when I power on the device. The Birdseye maps never show up in the menu on the 20x and I get the error every time when I power it on. If I delete all of the Birdseye files from the device I do not get the error.
  • If BaseCamp shows it on your device but it's not being accepted when you switch on your device to view it there then it's likely an account error somewhere. You will need to contact Garmin Product Support by phone for help.

That would make sense. The whole process seems like it is working properly until I power on the device and get the error. The handheld itself functions perfectly except for the Birdseye part. This eTrex 20x is a upgrade from a eTrex Venture HC, specifically for the purpose of using these maps, so I am bummed it does not work. I live in Northern Minnesota and I canoe camp in the backcountry where there is no cell service at all. I always have a map and compass with me as well as the Garmin. I think I will really like the new one once I get this bug worked out. As it stands the new one doesn't do anything that the old one couldn't do. I may spring for the 24k Topo Map (vector) but I have not been in the mood to spend more cash on this thing with the problems I've had. I went for the Birdseye Topo maps because I like that style of map, not because it is cheaper.
So, thanks a bunch for your help. I am confident now that this will work out in the long run. I will contact support, which I was planning on doing next at any rate. I don't want to return the unit, pay re-stocking fee and eat the $30 Birdseye price.

    Invalid Birdseye File

I too have the same problem. Previous BirdsEye maps work on my Oregon 600 and can be transferred on and off. When I try to transfer a new section of BirdsEye, however, I receive the message "Invalid BirdsEye File" on my device. Everything else was packed for the trip until that repeated error message brought everything to a screeching halt.
