Base camp keeps taking me on other, longer roads when I am creating a route

I am new to basecamp, having previously done all my GPS routing with Microsoft Streets and Trips, which is no longer sold or supported.

When I am creating a route in basecamp, it seems to do OK when I am clicking on roads that I want to take, when they are interstates. I routed myself from St. Louis to Great Barrington, MA OK. When I try to route on smaller roads, as I click on the road ahead, it jumps to some route to that point, but off to the side on some other roads/streets. It is virtually impossible to route through city streets.
My specific area is that I am trying to route from Great Barrington MA to Pittsfield MA on Hwy 7. I have tried it 20 times or more, still get mo results except winding routes on other roads.

Can anyone give me some guidance?

I am using a new Win 10 computer, Version 4.6.2 of BaseCamp, under Driving Preferences, I selected Faster Time, only unpaved road avoidance, no feature avoidances. I tried shorter distance but it made no difference.

Is there some other program which I can use to generate a gpx file to download to my Garmin device?
