How to copy routes from Basecamp 6.4.2 to gpsmap64s?

I just bought a GPSMap64s and installed BaseCamp 4.6.2. Everything is updated to the latest everything.

I am able to create waypoints and from them a simple route. I am testing my unit out and wanted to upload this
newly created route to the GPS.

Unfortunately, it seems as if "Send to" does nothing. I tried "Send to" to the GPSMAP64 device, to the
"Internal Storage" folder, to the "GPS SD card G:" and to the "User Data" folder in the microSD. But nothing
shows up on the device anywhere. So what is the purpose of "send to"?

What I found I had to do was to select the list in the top section of BaseCamp, then "File->Export" the list
to "gpx", then using Windows Explorer, manually copy the newly created gpx file to the SD card's Garmin/GPX folder.

Is this really the way it's supposed to work? If, so why don't they document all these steps and then
decommission "Send to" since "Send to" doesn't really do anything?
  • Send to works for me and has for years, so unsure what you're doing wrong. What options do you see listed when you select Send to, and how have you selected what to send?
  • I open up GPSMAP and select a list I created in gpsmap - in this case
    SYtoRF, then right click

I select Send To and I have several destinations to choose from.

I have tested it by selecting the GPSMAP 64s H:, click OK nothing happens - the popup box closes

I've also selected the Internal Storage folder, click OK nothing happens - the popup box closes

I've also selected the GPS SD card G:, click OK nothing happens - the popup box closes

I've also selected the User Data folder, click OK nothing happens - the popup box closes

(The Memory Card J: is another device, unrelated to the GPS)

I've verified that nothing happens by using Windows Explorer and going
to H: (GPS device) and searched for SYtoRF. I can not find anything by that name.

I also do the same on G: (microSD card)

If I disconnect the unit and start it up and go to Route Manager
    I do not see SYtoRF.

If I connect the device to the laptop and now export the list as gpx

I can then copy that file to the microSD card

and it is now usable on the device

    What am I doing wrong?
  • If you're looking for the name of the list you won't find it, BaseCamp when it sends data to a device or sd card sends it as a file named temp.gpx, are you seeing that when you look at the device/card?

Have you tried dragging/dropping, does that work for you?

    Both work fine for me.

If not then you may need to uninstall then reinstall BaseCamp.
  • I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be dragging/dropping from where to where.

I did some dragging/dropping - I did not find anything named temp.gpx on the GPS and no routes were
present when I started up the GPS unit after doing this.

I dragged/dropped the route listed in the bottom left to the SD card/UserData in the upper section - there
was a "yellow" indication, followed by a green check mark, but I did not find anything changed on the
card itself. I also tried dragging/dropping the list in the upper pane to the same location. Same thing
it went yellow, then green check, but nothing changed on the card.

I've uninstalled Basecamp - but it had never been installed before - I only did it after buying the GPS
so I'm not clear how a fresh install could be corrupted. And after doing the uninstall/reinstall "Send to"
    still does nothing.

You'd think a simple "Send to" would work out of the box. I guess I have to do the "export to"
option and then manually copy/paste the resulting gpx outside of Basecamp to get routes to
the unit. Not impossible, but kind of clunky, and not intuitive.
  • Well something is strange as it's always worked for me, and I can't recall others having an issue.

To drag/drop select your data and then drag/drop it into your device or SD card.

Whichever method you use you should get a temp.gpx file in the GPX folder of your device/card. If that isn't happening you have an issue somewhere in your setup as BC isn't working as it should.
  • The previous model in the 60's series would break sent items into object types. Thus your file would be broken into mutiple files for each object type (e.g. Route#.gpx, Track#.gpx, Waypoints#.gpx). These files will appear in the Garmin/GPX directory. Routes will not be visible on the map until they are activated. To see if your route is available on the device you can either bring up the Route Planner or use Find; Routes. If you used Waypoints in your Route, they should be visible in the Waypoint Manager.

If transfer from BaseCamp to the device was successful, then clicking on the Device internal memory or sd card (depending on where items were sent) should cause the objects to appear in the BaseCamp Map window.

You should look for the gpx files mentioned above on your device. GPX files are text files and can by opened with Notepad, Wordpad or any text editor. Look for <rte> then under this look for <name> and check to see if it is your route.

You may find multiple copies of the items you sent, so it would be best to do some cleanup on the device.

If you files are not being sent or not being seen by the device (but visible in BaseCamp), then it would be best to notify Garmin support of the problem. You should also check to make sure you have the current firmware on the device.
