Etrex 20 gpx file won't open in basecamp or memory map

Help!
Yesterday my wife has just completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks which was a massive achievement for her, and she used my Etrex 20 to log it. A the end of the route I saved the current track and named it. This morning there was an error message when reading from the Etrex to basecamp and the file won't open. I can see it has 4kb of data and have opened the file in notepad and there is data there. However neither basecamp nor memory map can read it. I tried uploading it directly to Garmin Connect but it said there was an error in the file. Does anyone know how to fix a corrupt file? Is it possible?

I have attached the notepad log, but I can't attach the gpx file here.

Please help save my marital harmony!

How have you tried getting the file from your Etrex into BaseCamp?

Is it still viewable on the Etrex itself? If so simply power cycling your Etrex and possibly also power cycling your PC should make it work.

You could also try directly importing the .gpx file from the Etrex into BaseCamp.

It's not on the extra anymore because I cleared all the old data when trying to solve the sync problem. I can't import it into base camp as it gives me an error message saying that it had encountered an 'unexpected error'. Power cycling it didn't work either.

Where is it then if not on the Etrex? If simply a gpx file on your PC put it back on your Etrex and see if it will read it.

I saved it as a file on my desktop. I've just tried to transfer it back onto my etrex but it is not appearing in the etrex when I access it in basecamp. I can see it on the etrex in file explorer.

Can you view it ON your Etrex? Look in Route planner and Trip manager.

That file does not look like a gpx file; it is missing the headers that would identify the schema :-(

If I were you I would compare a copy of it to another file of the same type from the device to see exactly how it differs in form.

Further, if it is supposed to be a track file there are very very few "track points" so my guess is that it is only a file fragment.

You might try plotting the points by hand to see exactly where they are and if there are a sufficient number to at least suggest your wife's accomplishment I would do it up nicely and then frame the result and present it to her :-)

Did you delete the current file after saving the file?

If not load it in BaseCamp. You will probably have extra points after the end. You can then delete the extra points using BaseCamp.

Well he said it's not on the Etrex and that he deleted all the stuff, so I don't think that will help this time. I'm still unclear what file he has on his PC and whether the notepad.txt file he originally attached is the file or something else. I'm still waiting for him to reinstall the original file (which he implies he has) back onto the Etrex to see if he can then again view the track on the Etrex, but I'm not hopeful.
