Basecamp: Disable "intelligent routing" completely?

Hi

I'm creating routes in Basecamp for motorcycle use on various ZUmo devices.
Sometimes i have quite some problems creating some parts of a route as Basecamp simply routes another way then the one i selected, and that is even with setting points at short interval.
Sometimes i can also have a route that cross's a earlier part of the same route.

I don't think that i'm doing something illegal routing, but it is as Basecamp sometimes just decides on it's own.
I have disable all "avoid" options so those should not interfere with the routing.
Then there is the three ways of routing: Shortest, fastest and curvy roads. I believe those have influence on how the routing is done.

So isn't it possible to disable all intelligence so a route is just drawn following the points i place (on the road of course)?

As far as i remember back then Mapsource had not those intelligent behaviours.

  • Well both BaseCamp and Mapsource use the same maps installed on your PC and will route according to those maps. I don't understand what you mean when you say a route is 'just drawn following the points I place'.

Both programs join points based on their routing algorithm and the map selected. If you simply want a route that joins the dots you place then use direct activity, but I don't really think you want that?

The best way to create a route is to create a start and end point. Let BaseCamp/Mapsource calculate the route between them and then 'rubber band' it to make it go the way you want.

The routes are used for cycling races, and has to be exactly as the race organiser has published. So it is not just a route from A to B and then let Basecamp decide the route.
In cities especially there can be quite a lot of turns, and it happens often that Basecamp here decides a better route than the one i have drawn, even though i have points at each turn and some in between also.

It is long time since i used Mapsource (as it has not been update for years), but i don't remember that i had such issues in Mapsource, so i still believe that there is more "intelligence" build into Basecamp.
  • I don't believe so but you can always use Mapsource if you wish, it still works.

I understand you need to follow an exact route but rubber banding should allow you to do that.

Since you are dealing with Zumo devices why not just make a Track in BaseCamp, transfer it to the Zumo, and then have the Zumo make a Route from the track? The Route from Track function on the device will create a Route that is exactly faithful to the Track.

This might also work if you create the Route from a Track in BaseCamp assuming all the Zumos have the exact same map installed and the same routing options selected.
