converting tracks to routes

Hi,
I am new to basecamp, having been using tourstart.
However, I wanted to be able to see my tracks, adjust them, and improve the route for next time. (I travel through north Wales occasionally on my Bike, and so I am exploring the roads to find the best)

Basecamp claim to have this feature, but it is not working for me. If I right click on the "Active log" file, and select create route, I just get a straight ink line from start to finish, and the message:

There was an error calculating this route.

Is there another way of achieving this please?

Can I make a route from an adventure? I assume that an adventure shared, would be something someone else might want ot follow, but there seemto be no import or export obvious.

Being able to convert a track to a route is dependant on what map you have selected in BaseCamp. If you're getting a straight line I suspect the map you've selected isn't routeable.

Yes that has partially solved it. It still gives a straight line between the beginning an the ending though, which is not quite what I was imagining.

I had imported the OSM Generic Routable maps, as the detail on the basecamp maps is not great, I have switched back to the generic one. But now my track wanders accross areas with no road :)

I have great maps on my Garmin, but I think I am right in saying I need to buy them again to use them on Basecamp?

Well installing them for BaseCamp to use depends on the maps and your device. Which map and device do you have? Some maps can be installed on your PC, others cannot.

If you're still getting a straight line with a routeable map selected open the route properties (double click or right click and select Open) and ensure a profile other than Direct is selected in the drop down list top right.

Ah, Ok, Tried it with the zumo plugged in and using the map on the Zumo
I have a Ducati branded Zumo 390 with CN Europ NTU 2016.10

it is not showing all the roads that are on Open Street Map though.

This has allowed it to calculate the track. sorry I am being such a noob. I cannot seem to see any way to edit it. On tourstart, its a simple drag and drop, and save it as a different route name. :(

You ought to update the map, as the latest is 2017.10 ...

As for editing a route or track, you can simply use the Alt key plus the hand tool to click anywhere on the route or track and you can then rubber band it.

Alt :) who knew! Thanks. It seems to rewite alot of the track then, is that right? Any tips?

Well how much or how little really depends on how many points are in the track/route. Afraid there's nothing really you can do about that, although if you're creating the tracks on your GPS set it to record track points more often.

Seems Basecamp is quite powerful, but not intuative. you have to invest time to learn it. Is that a fair assessment?

tourstart is easier by comparison, but perhaps more basic.

Bit like MS office. Basic stuff isn't too bad but learning the detail can take a while ;)
