How create tcx correctly?

Hi, I am having a strange behavior on edge 1000 when I import a tcx in NewFiles folder created by basecamp.
I have imported in basecamp a .fit flie from garmin edge 1000 and I added several waypoints on the trail. So I selected everything (track and waypoints in the list in bottom left side) and I exported using "File> Export> Export selection" in format Garmin Training Center v2 * .tcx to have a list of waypoints and the remaining distance when navigating.
I export manually the tcx file in NewFiles folder but when I load it to route, edge 1000 blocks on info page IF I tap "no" when ask me if I want navigate to start of route; IF I tap "yes" it calculate the route but it blocks at 97-98% and I must restart in both.

This problem doesn't happen if I disable "Turn Guidance" in course settings. My default map is OpenMTBmaps and garmin DEM map. My profile activity is MTB.

Update: I used TCXconverter software to convert the gps version of course in tcx format. I import it in newfiles folder and restart the device. When I load the course, the behavior is the same BUT when i restart the device, in map page I find the route loaded and I find the waypoints page too.
I got my result but isn't convenient reboot your device every time
Can someone help me?

be patient with me. I do not speak and understand English very well. sorry

Of course, it didn't happen with "Turn Guidance" disabled.

    My default map is OpenMTBmaps...

When you use this map to create your course in Basecamp, does the route stick to roads/paths or do you have to draw every curve or turn to make the route go where you want?

    ... and garmin DEM map.

The DEM map is used to select alternative routes by elevation. It's not used for loaded courses.

I find the waypoints page too.

I'm assuming you mean the "course points" page. Try it without the waypoints.

    Thank you for answer!
In this case I have imported a track previously tracked, using the same edge 1000. In this case I didn't drawn manually the track and I didn't use auto-routing tool to create the route.

Are there difference if I put tcx to newfiles folder in internal memory o external memory?

    The tcx is here:

    No, it doesn't matter.

    ============================

I downloaded the OpenMTB map for Italy and loaded the tcx file into Basecamp.

It appears that the path you took from just after the squiggly part northwest of Pezzalunga (at around 34.75 km) to around 42.75 km is on a path that isn't on the OpenMTB map. There's a later place where the track doesn't follow roads/paths on the map but the first is enough to mess the route calculation up.

"Turn Guidance" requires that the track follows the roads/paths that are on the map.

You either need to disable Turn Guidance and use track-following (and "off course warnings") or you need to split the track into on-road/path portions and off-road portions. You can use Turn Guidance for the on-road parts and track-following for the others.
  • Thanks for the patience and the time that you spend about my problem.
Then the problem may be the lack of road/path on openmtbmap. In this case I can't use turn-by-urn navigation but simply follow the track on the display. Everything is clear. It isn't clear why the tcx saved in basecamp block the device when I run the course both if I tap yes or no to navigate to the beginning of the track is.
When I use the tcx converted by TCXconverter app, it NOT Block the device but only the route calculation error.

Yes, that's what I suspect your problem is.

You could do that. Or you can split the track up.

I'm not sure what is going on there.

If you want to navigate to the start, you can drop a pin at the start and then have the device calculate a route to that.
  • Thank you for all.
Can you recommend me about a bettet map or more complete than openmtbmap?
  • Maps take a lot of effort to create and keep updated.

That work has to be worth doing.

That means the quality of maps is mostly based on how much money people can make doing the mapping work.

That ends-up meaning that automobile maps tend to be very good since there are a lot of drivers that can pay for the maps and because they are easier to create (the map data can be collected by driving).

Maps for hiking/mtb have much fewer people to buy them (the market for those maps is much smaller) and they are harder to create.

Hiking/MTB maps are usually created by volunteers. That means the coverage is going to be uneven. Places that have enough volunteers interested in doing the work for free will be better.

If you are hiking/MTB, you will have to be able to use incomplete maps.

If you are not able to use incomplete maps, you'll have to just ride on well-known roads.

I would think OpenMTB is a good choice for free maps. The map I got from OpenMTB looks pretty-good to me for where you were riding.

You can buy TOPO maps but those might not be much better and how good they are depends on the location (maps for some places will be better than others).

Thank you very much for all.
I'll follow your advice. A virtual hug! I will continue with openmtbmap.
    Ciao
  • Hi Guys,

I´m a little bit confused here.
I've always thought that only ROUTES are maps dependable but not tracks...
My group use to ride off roads MTB tracks that I prepare with Turn Warnings ON on the Edges(tcx files) , including 1000 as well Fenix3 (fit files) with no problem at all...
Some times those devices have none map installed... (besides the Base one that comes within the device but that doesn't count to anything).
    Please advise.

    Regards

The Edges can only use track files. ("Route" has a few different meanings, which makes thatbterm ambiguous.)

Here's a detailed description of how the Edges work:
