Newby - Basecamp refuses to direct rout

Whichever profile I use when I plot a route on BaseCamp 4.6.2 I have to press Ctrl all the time to make a direct link between spots otherwise BaseCamp will go to extreme lengths to connect the points by road. I only use the program to plot hiking routes across country. I cannot even join two plots without it dashing off to find roads to use. On my GPS64 I can plot direct routes with my profile but BaseCamp seems to insist that I am driving a car. Can anyone suggest a way of making BaseCamp use the profile, at the moment it appears to disregard it?
  • You need to select the Direct profile otherwise BaseCamp will try to route along roads/tracks etc that are in the maps database as 'routeable'. Any profile other than Direct will cause the issue you describe if you have a routable map selected.

    Map dependent

Thank you for the reply, however, the plot thickens:- On the world wide map and the free UK 50K download map from Garmin the plot is indeed direct, in fact it is direct whichever profile is chosen. On the OS 50K map that came on the GPS64S it is always via roads unless you hold down the Ctrl key when plotting. There is something odd in the way the maps affect the route, unfortunately the Garmin download map is not as detailed as the OS version so that is the one I like to use for plotting routes along footpaths. I found the Ctrl option through another query on the forum, otherwise it would make BaseCamp useless with the OS maps
  • Actually the plot is easily explained.

The base map and the free map aren't routeable which is why the profile has no effect.

Your OS map isn't either but the underlying road map that comes with it is. This is why you need to use the direct profile, as I've already explained. Any other profile and BC will try to use the road map. Use direct profile and there is no need to use the Ctrl key.

Sorry for being such a newby but when you say select "Direct" profile, that is in the profile box of "New Route" along with the Drag Start and Destination boxes? I select Direct there but it still uses the roads. As I said, the profile doesn't seem to have any effect and only holding Ctrl makes it direct. I'm thinking of deleting the Autoroute map to see if that cures it as I only want the GPS for walking. It just seems odd that the profile has no effect, at least not with the OS map.
  • Don't apologise, we were all newbies once :)

To be sure you actually have the Direct profile selected open the Route Properties either by double clicking the route in the bottom left hand pane or right clicking and selecting Open.

Look at the box top right that contains the profile for the route. It needs to say Direct. The box you're describing in the toolbar only applies to routes created after it's been changed.

Note you can't delete the autoroute map, that is part of the OS map, which is why any route you create for the OS map must use the direct profile.
