Map installed to Basecamp with Garmin Express is locked

HI,

I have been using the maps on my GPS in Basecamp, but this means connecting the GPS every time I want to work on a map. There was an option in Express to install my Camper 660 European map to Basecamp. Perfect!!!!!

However, the Basecamp map is showing as locked. If I try to unlock on the web, I can click "Retrive unlocks" and it says all went well, but nothing changes. If I click "Unlock Maps" It says I need a product key. (I ran Basecamp as administrator just in case)

So. It it possible to have the map on my PC without the GPS connected, if so, how do I unlock it?
  • Map should be ready for use. If it's not try downloading it again.

.... if so, how do I unlock it?

This problem has occurred from time to time. A call to support will fix it. Once support actually had to email me the unlock file and I manually installed it.
  • Thanks for the answers

    Hi,

I'll try reinstalling the map tomorrow, when I have a broadband connection. If that doesn't work, I'll try phoning support.

    Thanks

  • MyGarmin.com

If you registered your devices and purchases at myGarmin.com, your unlock codes for each purchased map is listed there. The last time something like this happened to me, I just copied the unlock from the web site and pasted into BaseCamp.
  • Fixed

    Hi all,

Thanks for the tips. I have downloaded the map again in Express and the new map is unlocked. The old one was still showing as locked. I just deleted the file and everything is up to date and working.

    Thanks for your help.

Got it to work ... for a while

    Hi everybody,

I have tried your suggestions. Several times I thought it was working, but then it wasn't.

    1. I downloaded BaseCamp through Garmin Express about five times, but each time BaseCamp told me that the map was locked. Once GE installed BaseCamp version 4.4 instead of the latest version 4.6.2.

    2. Three times I finally got BaseCamp to work with the map in my computer, but it only worked until I closed BaseCamp.
    • Twice, a notice popped up that an update to BaseCamp was available to fix an issue with altitude. When I installed the update, BaseCamp worked with the installed map.
    • Once I just downloaded BaseCamp from the Garmin web site and installed it, and it worked.

    3. When BaseCamp began working with the maps in computer memory, all my lists disappeared and I had to create new ones.

    4. When I closed BaseCamp and later restarted it, it once again told me that the map in memory was locked, and the old lists returned. The new ones that I had created disappeared.

This is all pretty chaotic, so I figure there is a major bug in there somewhere. My next step will be to call support.
  • GE doesn't install BaseCamp, so if you were seeing a v4.4 something is wrong on your PC. Do you have a beta version of BaseCamp installed since you can't run two versions side by side?

Sounds though like you will need to call support to resolve this as I've never had issues updating/downloading maps for BaseCamp.

    Hi SUSSAMB,

I am confused by your comment that "GE doesn't install BaseCamp". In GE when you click Map Options, in the section "Install Map to Computer" the description says, "When you choose to install files to your computer, you will be installing Garmin BaseCamp in addition to the map updates." And that is what happens. I uninstalled BaseCamp before I ran GE, so BaseCamp no longer existed on my computer. Then, in GE I selected "Install to Computer", and after about 10 minutes both the map and BaseCamp were installed.

Another quirky thing that started happening after I first installed the map on my computer: BaseCamp displays the City Navigator North America NT map (in my Nuvi) superimposed over the Global Map that comes with BaseCamp. This never happened before, and I haven't figured out how to keep it from happening. Reinstalling BC and GE make no difference. This must be related to the problems with BC that I describe in my previous post. I see that there is a BaseCamp thread on this, "Bug: BaseCamp shows roads twice", that you posted to. It dates from 2013, and I am surprised that the problem has not been fixed. I plan to call support on all of these issues.
  • Ah yes. You're quite right as I'd forgotten that Express does that if BC isn't installed.

Your other problem I don't believe has ever been solved as it's affected so few users. It's a behaviour that has never been explained and shouldn't happen .... but it does occasionally crop up.

It'll be interesting to see what Product Support say.
  • Unlocking Maps Under BaseCamp

When you install BaseCamp on your windows computer, you usually use an administrator account, the same account used also to install Garmin Express and the maps and maps updates.
If you use this account to run everything on your computer, you don't get in trouble with the maps.
The problem arises when you use a non priviledge account to run your software.
In fact, if you look the folder
    C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Maps
you will see somme files that you will not find under your user folder C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Maps.
So, just copy the files fron the folder C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Maps to every folder
    C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Maps
of the non priviledge user runing your computer.
    Enjoy
    José
