When plotting my first trip on BC for my 665, I entered several via points along the route to force it onto some roads that I wanted to take. BC correctly plotted the route, and it correctly transferred to the 665. However, even though I set all of these via points to "Do not announce" in BC, they were each announced in my headset (SENA 20S) while on the ride. I think I read somewhere that the 665 announces them anyway, even when set to "Do not announce". Is there any way to prevent this?
You say you have a 665. Garmin uses the same numbers for various model lines so it would be helpful if you identified if you have a Nuvi, Zumo etc. Assuming you have a Zumo 665: the feature to make a point "Do Not Announce {shaping point)" adds a piece of code to the GPX file that the 665 does not recognize. This applies to older GPS units that use Route Planner. Newer units that use Trip Planner do recognize this feature.
You can set shaping points in BaseCamp that will not be announced by the Z665 though. By placing the shaping point precisely in an intersection they will not be announced. The only drawback to using this method is that the point is coded to the map data. With subsequent map updates the point might end up being slightly misplaced, which would necessitate checking the route closely and moving any misplaced points.
I didn't know that. Sorry, it's a Zumo 665LM. Is this trick limited to intersections where you are scheduled to make a turn, or any intersection along the route?
It's not really a trick, it's worked this way for as long as I've used Mapsource & Basecamp (let's just say many years).
Simply by placing a shaping point in any intersection the point will not announce. Doesn't have to be an intersection where you make a turn; in fact I generally avoid placing them at intersections where I am turning but instead place them at an intersection just prior to, and just subsequent to the turn.
Not all devices support the "Do not announce" attribute. I have an older Nuvi 760 that does not. Quite annoying to have it announce all the via points with a manually altered route. Plus all those flags show on the map. My newer Nuvi 65LM does honor the "Do not announce" setting. I don't know about the 64s or 62s. I have the 64s as well, but I've never sent a route to it so I don't know if it does or does not.
