What is the best way to update a route in the Garmin? For example, the route exists on the Garmin. I use BC to make changes to the route so now it's time send the updated route from BC to the Garmin. Should I manually delete the route from the Garmin or can I trust that the transfer from BC to the Garmin will write-over the original route with the updated changes?
I think I asked a poor question originally. Sorry. Let me start over. I should have said that I have routes on my SD card that have not been imported into the Zumo yet. In my example, I update my BC routes (so now the SD card routes are out-of-date) and now I'm ready to send the new, updated routes to the SD card. At this point they are not in the Garmin so I cannot use the Garmin to delete them. Now is the question I should have asked. Do I need to manually delete the GPX files from my SD card before sending them from BC to the SD card or will the transfer process write-over the old GPX files? Thanks again for all your wisdom.
BaseCamp sends a temp.gpx file to your device. IF you haven't renamed it then BaseCamp should overwrite it with the next temp.gpx file
But the question then is did you also send waypoints in that gpx file? If so then while you haven't imported the routes your Zumo will, I believe, have imported the waypoints into favourites. To be absolutely safe I'd delete the original gpx file.
My older nuvi 1490 can also hold many .gpx files if required and you can then import routes as required. I tended to send routes from BC to my nuvi, then rename the temp.gpx file to something more suitable that would remind me what data it contained, eg French holiday routes.gpx
I really appreciate your last sentence. Those GPX filenames are not helpful.
I transferred 28 routes to the SD card so now I have 28 meaningless filenames. If you are unaware, I used Notepad (text editor) to open the files to try to identify my friendly route name. I found it in the following code inside the GPX.
