'exception occurred during the backup process' - Basecamp

I recently upgraded to Win 10. I have Basecamp 4.6.2 installed. I am just preparing for two weeks walking holiday, and have set up everything for my Oregon 650 on my PC Basecamp and went to back this up for restore onto my portable laptop, but evry time I try backup I get this message. I have tried to several different locations, but all fail. I don't want to lose several weeks work so, just in case, I don't want to reinstall until I have backed up.

I can't find an obvious solution by searching online or Garmin. Can anyone help please?

Many thanks.

You could try this... Install Basecamp on the laptop (you have to do this anyway). On the PC Basecamp Export to GPX any data you want on the laptop. Copy the GPX file(s) to the laptop. Import them into Basecamp on the laptop.

Check them out on the laptop and make sure everything you need got transferred over.

You can't hurt anything doing this.

    ...ken...
  • kganshirt's idea should work ... you could also load everything onto your Oregon from BaseCamp on your PC, then connect the Oregon to your laptop and drag/drop the data from it into BaseCamp there.

There are other methods, but given what you say both ideas are probably the simplest for you.

Thank you both - SUSSAMB & kganshirt.

I have been using both the PC with Win 7 and laptop with Win 8.1 for three years with Basecamp loaded to both and no problems backing-up the PC and restoring to the laptop for individual trips. It is just the upgrade to Win 10 on the PC that seems to create the 'exception' problem (the laptop still backs up fine). But since there seem to be very few others querying this, maybe it is a problem with my PC upgrade. I have asked Garmin support as well now, and will report back with any solution.

There is certainly no problem exporting the GPX files (I am regularly doing this in and out with GPX, KML, KMZ etc to create my own routes) but this doesn't retain the separate walks structures in directories and sub-directories, which then takes days to sort out again. Similarly, I can go via my Oregon to upload to the laptop as a work around, but I was hoping someone who had experienced this problem might have a simple long term solution.

    Thanks again anyway!

    Best wishes
  • If you want to retain the directory structure copy the BaseCamp database folder from your PC and paste it in the correct place on your laptop. I do that in preference to using the backup/restore function.

Thanks - that worked a treat - once I had found the location in Win 10! I used to ocasionally work with the Garmin directory files, but haven't done so in Win 10. We are going to La Palma to try to find some sun, but the roads are very wiggly and impossible to find locations on Spanish (or DWG etc) maps, so I am taking my old Nuvi with parking places copied across as well - so I can now copy those directly as needed from the laptop as well. So really good - thanks.
