Creating a route on computer with no device connected?

I have just bought a Garmin 660 LMT-D and enjoying learning how to use it but it appears that the GPS needs to be connected to the computer to for me to be able to create a route. Have I misunderstood the instructions or is it possible to download the maps? If this is the wrong forum for this question I apologise and hope that someone will let me know which is the correct one. Many thanks.
  • I believe I've answered this elsewhere.

If the maps on your device are up to date, for you that is CN EU 2016.30, then you either have to have your device connected or copy the map files to another removable drive, eg a memory stick. Maps need to be in a folder named Garmin on a removable drive.

When the next map update comes out you can use Express to install the maps to both your device and PC, then BaseCamp will be able to use the maps directly on the PC.

Many thanks for your help. I suppose that Gamin must have a reason for not allowing the maps to be downloaded onto a computer and its not much of an imposition. Having said that I suppose that its not possible to save a completed route to a computer and even if one did I don't suppose that it would be editable?
  • Well Garmin do allow it but it has to be downloaded so can only be done during a map update. MapSource, which BaseCamp replaced, wouldn't even read the maps off a device.

And yes, you can create, edit and save routes within BaseCamp, that's mainly what it's for :)

Thats good to know because motor caravanning is a little like gardening. By that I mean that probably the best part of gardening is looking through seed catalogues and what one would like to plant in the Spring whereas one of the best parts of motor caravanning is planning what places to visit in the Spring and that is what I hope to use Garmin for so many thanks for your help.
  • Know what you mean. I plan all my holidays and walking trips on BaseCamp and enjoy that aspect of my holiday sometimes more than the actual event :)
