Overlays toggle box?

After updating BaseCamp to Ver 4.6.2 I find a toggle box for Show/Hide Overlays permanently blocking some of the map space. But when I import a kmz file (I guessed this was an overlay), the toggle has no effect. Two questions:

1. What is that box for, and can it be made to toggle imported kmz files?

2. Can Basecamp developers please put this capability (whatever it is) under View > Toolbars (like all the other BaseCamp tools) instead of taking up map space with no option to remove the box if not needed? (Imagine if all tools did that - eventually we would not see any map at all!)
  • OK, I have found by experiment that some KMZ files are interpreted by BaseCamp as overlays (specifically, images that I geo-reference in Google Earth, save as KMZ, then import into BaseCamp). Other KMZ files (with geo-referenced tracks and waypoints) are imported and displayed, but not interpreted by BaseCamp as overlays. So that answers Q1.

Q2 can stand as a suggestion to Garmin developers for future versions of BaseCamp. If you read this thread and value your map space free of enforced toolbox dialogues, consider adding your voice in support of this suggestion.
