Turning Off Snap to Trail Setting

Former Member

I'm trying to create a route that follows a man-made trail and then goes off-trail. Basecamp ignores the route I'm trying to draw and connects my waypoints using the man-made trail, even though this greatly increases distance. How can I draw a map without it snapping to established trails?

Thanks

Iain
  • Basecamp will route according to the map you've selected provided you've chosen an activity setting other than direct. Sounds like the map won't route along that particular stretch. You have two options. Use the direct profile throughout. Or for that particular part of the route go into route properties, select the point where it doesn't do what you want and edit it so that it uses the direct profile at that point, you may need to do that at a couple of points depending how long that section is.

Unfortunately, it isn't so easy and I see it as a bug.
First example: Select several points in route - you can't change profile for them, you have to do it one by one
Second example: Start to create your route in walking profile. Then you need some part of the route to be direct. You change the profile to direct but the route is still created in former profile
Third example - really annoying. Choose on point in the route, click on it twice to change properties. Instead of properties of one point, you will see the points of the whole route.

I know it makes no sense to rant but basecamp is full of similar small annoyances. I use it for planning the outdoor activities and I meet those obstacles all the time.

    Best Regards

  • Must say I don't see it as an issue as maps invariably don't route where I want to walk so I pretty much use Direct all the time, but I agree it would be useful if you were able to select multiple points and change their profile at the same time.

Changing the profile part way through won't work, as you've found out. Try creating two routes, one in a routing profile, the other in direct, then join the two. I have no idea if that works or not but it would be good if it did.

Clicking twice on a point or right clicking it and selecting Edit properties both work the same for me, so not sure why it's opening the whole route when you try it

Incidentally the first two aren't bugs, it's how it's designed to work. I agree though it's not ideal and maybe one for the developers to pick up.

Try the CTRL while pointing to next point

When you first chose an hiking or walking profile and within the route you will goïng "off rout" (so: DIRECT route) you can use the CTRL while pointing on the next spot. At that time BC change for one time in "DIRECT MODE" In that way you can made several "off route" points
  • Try creating two route -
I created first route - walking profile
I created second route - direct profile
I have to go to the last point in the first route and change it to direct otherwise, the connection is in walking profile which is what I don't want

clicking twice - do we speak about the same kind of point? I am speaking about the point in route. You are speaking about the point which is not in route I guess.

    Incidentally, the first two aren't bug's :-)

You are right. I don't know how could I miss it. I thought I tried all "Alt", "Shift" keys. I wonder how many people miss it as well :-)
Definitely, for me, the basecamp is 50% better now.

    Thank you,

No, I'm speaking about a point in the route.

I have basecamp version 4.6.2 on windows. When I right click the point in the route, the option is "Open", I don't see any "Edit". Then when the whole route opens I can choose "Edit via point"
  • Ah ok, I misunderstood you. You can't just click on the route itself, you need to open Route properties and do it from there.

That's clear. And that's exactly the small annoyance I was talking about. This is the part where a user-friendly program would behave differently from basecamp.
