Wont GEOTAG

I select a Track, then select "Edit\Geotag photos using track....". Then select a folder with pictures and receive the message " No Photos are good candidates for geotracking". Ive tried several different folders containing pictures all with same result. The pictures are all .jpg.

I want to Geotrack the pictures to create an Adventure.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

    Have you looked at the time/date stamps on the JPEGS and compared them with your tracks? How great is the time difference, if any?

    Do the pictures have locations in their EXIF data?

    I expect thats the problem.
    Most times the pictures I want to attach will have no time relationship to the track times.
    So in order for Garmin to allow me to attach pictures the software would need to allow me to select infinite times or some other control to do that?. The occasions when time stamps on pictures would actually be synced with the track are rare. For example, I will have ridden a particular route many times and picked the best pics from a group of pictures taken over the many trips. The picture times could be over years difference. Perhaps I can try removing the meta data for time on each picture to allow Basecamp to Geotag. Also, the camera used does not have GPS so the pics dont carry location data.

    IIRC that's exactly how Garmin does it, by time comparison between the track-point and the jpeg. If they are within some time the picture is placed at that point. You will most likely have to do this manually either by changing the times on each picture to match a specific point (or perhaps vice versa). Can't remember if Garmin has provided a way to manually place pictures on BaseCamp. If not, then I would encourage them to do so.

    Also be aware that if you are using "Nuvi type" tracks from the Current.gpx file that the tracks will be snapped to the centerline of the nearest road, and many points will be thinned out over those portions of the road which are in a straight line.

    Note: It is possible that Garmin has changed off road track recording in latest automobile device firmware to permit track point logging without snap to road feature.

    As far as I know, that's how all auto-setting geotag software works. It compares the points in your track file and matches the time stamps from the track points and the time stamps in the photos.

    You might look at GeoSetter (www.geosetter.de). It's very flexible by allowing you to adjust the time offset between the track file and the photos. For example, if I know the date in my camera was set to a different time zone or it just off by a certain amount, you can input that to compensate.

    That feature won't help you, since you said your photos were all taken over a very wide range of time. Another feature GeoSetter lets you do is drop a pin on the map and then sets the location of all the selected images to that pin's coordinates. You might find that useful. If you really need each photo geotagged separately and precisely, you'll have to do that manually, one by one.
