Reusing deleted waypoint names and/or database cleanup

I do understand why the database in Basecamp does not allow duplicate names, it's annoying but if that is the way they built the database, OK, I learned to live with it: every time I had to reuse a name (for example when importing waypoints or pictures with names already in the database from a previous import), I renamed or deleted the old names, emptied the 'Unlisted Data' folder, restarted BaseCamp and finally imported my data...

But unfortunately since the last few updates (4.6.1) it does not work that way anymore: BaseCamp keeps on renaming my imported data )-: (I can manually rename to the deleted names, but that's a lot of work after every file import)

Apparently previous versions of BaseCamp did some kind of cleanup on exit.
A new bug? Anyway this is a very annoying 'new feature'!

Is there a way to force BaseCamp to clean up its database, so that deleted names are re-used on import? I tried a back-up but that did not fix it.

Garmin Support suggested to remove and reinstall BaseCamp. That did not help.
So I searched a bit more myself and found a solution:

Basecamp stores imported pictures in directory %APPDATA%\Garmin\BaseCamp\GeotaggedPhotos\
If you delete pictures in Basecamp (also from "Unlisted Data" folder), then directory %APPDATA%\Garmin\BaseCamp\GeotaggedPhotos\ is cleaned up on exiting Basecamp.

Apparently, Basecamp is renaming an imported picture if there is a filename with identical first few characters (8?) in that directory. Therefore, if Basecamp's cleanup on exit fails, check %APPDATA%\Garmin\BaseCamp\GeotaggedPhotos\ and if deleted pictures are still there, delete them manually.
