Can't see maps on Montana

Former Member
Former Member
Newby with Montana and Basecamp.

I successfully downloaded City Navigator North America NT files to the microSD card in my Montana 680t, and can see the files in the garmin subdirectory on the SD card from MS explorer. With the gps connected to the computer, I can view the street map from BaseCamp--but I can't see the map on the gps. GarminExpress does not recognize the map files are on the SD card, and the Maps menu on the gps does not show the street map.

In BaseCamp menu Install Map reports "no unlocked maps were found for this device."

Manage Map Products reports the CN North America NT as "not lockable."

I have read a number of threads, but the solution is not obvious to me. Any help will be much appreciated.

  • How did you download the map?

The symptoms you describe point to either an incorrectly formatted card or the map files in the wrong folder.

If the Montana is like the nuvi the map should be in \Map, not in \Garmin.
  • It's not. Maps need to be in the Garmin folder :)

Once the OP replies we can help, but I'd like to know first where the map came from.

I used one of the Garmin programs, Express?, can't recall which as I had trouble finding a computer that would talk to the program (Windows 10 without Internet Explorer was not supported, and had to upgrade Windows Vista on an old laptop).

Maybe I should delete the files on the microSD and start over? Is there a specific format that should be used on the card?

Basemap on the computer sees the files and displays the map just fine.

    Thanks for your input.
  • For future use Win 10 includes IE so no need to use your old laptop!

How is your card formatted? Needs to be FAT32.

The card has three files in the G:\Garmin Sub-directory: a .gma, a .img, and .unl file.

There is also a sub-directory for two BirdsEye files downloaded and view-able in BaseCamp, but not on the device. Probably the same problem.

Arghh. I bet it is not FAT 32.

Well, it is "exFAT", whatever that is. I'll reformat and bet it will work.

    Thank you

FAT32 format works great, I just missed that requirement.

    Thank you again!
  • Great. I'll close this thread.
  • I am having the same problem after purchasing city navigator from Garmin. What and where is this fat32? The card in my GPS is a 32 scan disk.
