etrex 20 problem

Hi,
About 2 or 3 weeks ago I had my gps hooked up to the computer to download my tracks with basecamp and it said that there was an update for my etrex so I downloaded it.
The next time I downloaded my tracks I saw that they had all been combined and I figured that the update had messed with my settings. I checked and didn't see anything different so I cleared the gps and used it for another 3-4 activities over about a weeks time and when I finally uploaded them to my computer I saw that the tracks had again all been combined. I checked the settings again and the only thing that I could think was the it was archiving the tracks but I have it set to only archive "when full" and it wasn't even close to being full. Has anyone else had this problem or have any suggestions?

I will also note that I clear the trip settings at the beginning of each activity and that has always created a new track for me in the past.
  • I'm not sure what you mean when you say your tracks have all been 'combined', perhaps you could explain a bit more about what Basecamp is displaying?

    Sorry,

What I mean is that instead of having 3 separate files for 3 different activities (ex. 2 bike rides and a hike), like i was getting before, when imported into basecamp the gps is combining that into a single file.
  • I'm still not clear.

Whatever your Etrex is doing they all show in one folder on your Etrex in BaseCamp, and have always done so. My Etrex 20 and my Montana work that way too. That's how BaseCamp works.
  • A single gpx file can contain multiple objects (routes, tracks, waypoints).

So when you say "combined" do you mean that your tracks are joined together to form a single track or that multiple tracks are ending up in a single file?

Sorry, I am trying to explain things the best I can but I must be using the wrong words for things. Hopefully this is a more clear explanation.

Multiple tracks are ending up as a single file, I guess it is the current track on the gps. I have had this gps for about 2 years and until this started a few weeks ago each activity would show up as its own track/file with a name like "Current Track: 29 AUG 2015 18:12" when uploading from the gps to basecamp. The files still have the same type of name but will be one long track file for all of the separate activities I have done since i last cleared the gps.

So, say I went for a hike, a walk and a bike ride; before there would be a separate track file for each of those 3 activities and now they are all combined into a single track file.
  • Two things come to mind.

If you save the current track each time you will get separate tracks.

Also check your auto archive Settings. This affects how the archiving file structure works.

Before all I had to do was clear the current trip settings and it would give me separate tracks.

The archive setting is "when full" and it is not full.

Is there any way to undo an update?
  • Well there are various ways to skin a cat. I have no idea why you are seeing a different behaviour now and what I'm suggesting will do what you want. Why you specifically want to do that I also have no idea since BaseCamp will show you your separate tracks and allow you to save them if required.

If your archive setting is auto archive switch it to daily. It's possible you altered that setting unintentionally. With daily auto archiving you'll get a file with just a days track, which again may meet your needs.
  • Over the years I have seen Garmin make flip flop on how they log tracks. I suspect that this is what has changed. I’ll skip the details, but I will assume that when you view your saved file in BaseCamp that you no longer see three separate tracks, but now see all three of your tracks joined to form a single track.

If this is the case (and probably if it isn’t), then you what you should try is saving your tracks via the Track Manager. Try going to the Track Manager, Current Track, and Save Portion rather than Save Track. The alternative is to clear the Current Track before you start an activity and save it immediately after you finish.

As far as reverting back to an earlier version, there usually are websites that maintain all the firmware versions for a particular device. Try a web search for “etrex 20 revert firmware” and choose a site that has all the firmware versions and provides good instructions for rolling back to an earlier firmware.

For the file or files that you have already saved, you will likely have to edit them in BaseCamp to separate the individual tracks if you have not done so already.

I think that you are assuming correctly and your solution seems like it would work, I had just gotten used to the ease of simply and quickly clearing the "trip computer" screen to start a new track instead of clearing the old track and remembering to save the current track at the end. My previous way had very little risk of accidentally deleting a track that was not saved.

The problem is that basecamp is not showing me my separate tracks, just one combined track (not a folder with multiple tracks).

The auto archive set to daily will not work for me because there are frequently times when I use my gps for multiple activities in one day.

By the way, I do appreciate all of these responses, thank you.
