I am trying to make a route from a saved track. I have the track selected and showing on map, I go to File:New - Direct Route from Selected Track is grayed out. The track has just over 6000 points. What is wrong?
  • I think you need to select Direct Activity for this to work.

    route from track?

I used help and figured that out. Change the route to Direct Route using activity profile.

Still Direct Route from selected track was greyed out.

    route from track

This is what I am trying to do. Are there limitations on the track or specifics on activity profile? It says Change the Activity Profile, and I did to Direct.

Creating a Route Based on a Track

You can create a route based on a track. This can be useful if you need to apply route options to the track or use it on devices that do not support tracks.

If necessary, select a map product.
If necessary, change the activity profile.
    Select a track.
Select File > New > Direct Route from Selected Track.
Enter the maximum number of points to add to the route (optional).
    Select OK.
  • That is working for me, as is right clicking the track and selecting Create route from selected track. I'm not sure but perhaps it's the number of points in your track that is causing the issue. Try splitting it into smaller tracks to see if it then works?
  • Garmin supports two type of routes Direct and Automated/Calculated. Direct Routes are direct from point to point. Automated/Calculated Routes follow routable features, provided they exist, on a given map selection (roads, trails). Regardless of where the points are a path to the point must follow a routable feature in an Automated/Calculated Route. Activity Profiles set parameters to aid the software in determining a suitable route. The Direct Profile is used for creating a Direct Route. All other Profiles are used for creating Automated/Calculated Routes.

For a Direct Route the choice of map is irrelevant. For Automated/Calculated Routes, if the selected map does not contain routable features, a Direct Route will be created (or at least was) regardless of the Activity Profile.

My device will create/accept tracks up to 10,000 points, so a 6000 point track should not be a problem. Unless things have change, no limitations are placed on the number of points in the created Route. Garmin devices are limited on how many points they can use. For example, by device will accept 50 points for an Automated/Calculated Route and 250 points for a Direct Route.

When BaseCamp creates a Route from a Track it does not replace the Track. It should create a new object with the Route Icon (3 boxes connected by lines).

If you create an empty list and move the track to this list go through your steps and press OK, what happens? An error message, nothing, something else?

I am not clear why you thing a Route would be better for sharing than a Track.

    Route from track

Thanks very much for that detail. It helps a lot.

What I am wanting is a route from a track. I understand the track has many points and I'd like to make a route with maybe only 20 points at intersections, route-able. I can see that the software would not know where to put the waypoints. I guess I can view the track and determine waypoints myself and layout the route.

I'd like to have a route that I can modify by moving or inserting waypoints. This doesnt work with tracks because there are so many points.

I'm not sure what is the purpose of 'Create route from track'?

The track came from a day's ride from an archive file. I want to be able to see where I've been and modify it.

    Route from track.

My current problem is that I have the track selected, and the option Direct route from track is grayed out, not available. The track has about 6000 points.

To add further to the confusion....

I'm on a mid-2007 iMac, running OSX 10.11.1, BaseCamp 4.5.2 and have selected a Track loaded from a Delorme PN-60 with 19,901 points. Direct is selected in the Activity window on the upper right. I Right clicked on the Track in the lower left pane and selected Create Route from Track. Approximately 6 seconds later I now have a 47 stop Route that faithfully follows the original Track.

Then I did the same thing again except I selected a Motorcycling activity. This time it took about a minute and now I have another faithful route with 1 stop and 97 directions.

So, there is either something wrong with your install of BaseCamp or something wrong with your track.

As others have previously suggested, please post a link to your track so others can see if it works.
