Track joining automatically with a strait line

Anyone?
In Base camp, when joining tracks, how can I prevent the automatic closing loop of a track or multiple track with a straight line. I keep having straight line all over the place.

Thanks
  • Well if you try to join two tracks where the end of one isn't the start of another you will get a straight line between the two.

    Hello Bkrd_rider,

The other possibility is the second track is going the wrong direction.

I always make a New List and rename it > copy in the 2 tracks I want to join so I do not lose the originals > select the track I want to use for the start and remember its name > zoom up at the join point and remove unneeded points > right click the second track > Invert > select both tracks > Right click > Join The Selected Tracks > move the starting track to the top of the list > Okay > No > double click the new track and make sure it looks correct and then delete the 2 original pieces.
  • I'll just add that if you wish to keep the original tracks, you must duplicate them.

The method above is the safest, but changing the order of tracks or the inverting a specific track can be done in the Join Tracks pop-up window. The up and down arrows on the left will move a selected track, while the curved arrow between them will invert the select track. A ctrl-z or Edit menu > undo will remove the new track and return the parts. But you will need to have this figured out before starting the Joining - which is another plus for the method above.

Another danger might be a computer crash. I seldom use this feature so I am not sure if the Date/Time data is lost when joining tracks. If it is and you do not care about the time data in the original tracks, the original tracks could be recovered by cutting that long straight line.

Although the routes join together to create a loop, you can easily delete the straight line that creates the loop by use of the scissors.

If you select the scissors icon, then hold them over the last section of track which has created the loop, and which you wish to delete, this section will be highlighted grey. Click on the greyed section(s) of route so that the greyed part starts at the point you want to delete - the rest that you want to keep, will remain magenta (or whatever colour you are using). You will then get a pop up that asks if you want the two new routes to share a the waypoint at the join. Assuming you want to delete this final section, select "No". Your main route will no longer have the deleted sections forming part of the route. The deleted section will form a new route / track and should be deleted from the left hand panel, where the route names are display.

I've just been having another play with this. It appears that if you combine the routes using the commands "Edit" "Advanced" "Join Routes", it never joins the two routes together to form a loop. If, in the left hand window showing the routes etc, you drag the second of the two routes into the first route, then sometimes, and I haven't worked out the exact conditions, it forms a complete loop. So it might be worth trying the merge process using the "Edit" "Advanced" "Join Routes" method as repeated attempts with this have never produced a loop.

I have tried this also, it doesn't work with tracks, it is still looping them. It is very annoying......

    Thanks
  • I've never had tracks loop when joining them. You may get straight lines for the reason I gave, but if otherwise it's not working then again as posted above make sure the tracks are being joined in the correct order and all are joined end of one to start of another.

    Painful!!!!!!!

I did try all of these step again and again and it is always drawing a strait line. Both track I am trying to join are touching, I did try to change the direction of each on, moved up and down for the order. When trying all of this, the only difference is the straight line change location. I have spent quite a few hours on multiple set of tracks, always the same result... Can it be done with Map Source???

When using the scissors (divide tool), I can't select the strait line only, so I can't remove this straight section only. I also can't select the exact part of a track I want to remove since most of the time since the software seams to pick what it wants and I can only add to it.... Any advise????

    Thanks guys for your help!

Just tried Mapsource, same thing.. It might be me??????

Attach copies of your tracks with a note telling which track is first, second, etc. and someone will check to see what is happening. :)

....I also can't select the exact part of a track I want to remove ....

Double click the track in the list. The track properties window opens. Click the first point, then while holding the Shift key, select another point a few hundred points down. This section of the track will turn gold on the map. While still holding down the Shift key, move around and select either more or less points until only the section of straight line is highlighted, then hit the delete key. Also, you can select a point and automatically select hundreds of previous or later points by using the Shift-Home or Shift-End keys.

It WILL NOT work if your track is a loop as the program will just keep creating a straight line to reconnect the loop, and if your section is in the middle of a non loop track it will do the same. It does work at either end of an A to B track.
