Extending existing route

I want to have two or three extensions to a planned cycle route on roads and tracks, but without using waypoints. I have created the first common part of all the routes, and saved it as Name 1. I used direct routing for this as the map is not fully interactive and will not follow the small tracks if I use road cycling as the activity profile.

I now want to create the variations, continuing from the last point of the saved route. I can duplicate Name 1, and then rename as appropriate, say Name 2. However I can't find a way of continuing on from the last point. It appears I have to completely retrace my steps for every new route. Is BC really this dumb?

Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks
  • You will need to place the Edit tool (Pencil) on top of the last point (you may have to zoom in on it). You should see a dark gray dot. A left mouse click will initiate extension of the route.

If for some reason this is difficult to do, extend the route between the last point and the previous point (add all of your points once you begin), open up the Properties Window (double click on the route in the lower left pane), select the last point (old end point) and move it up the list to its proper position with the up arrow on the right side of the window.

Thanks. A bit fiddly sometimes (I have tried two or three different times)

If I wanted to create a common start and common end with variations in the middle, is it possible to create separate common start and finish routes and join them up, or do I have to create a single route with detail of the start and end, and then save as say, route xx, route xy route xz, and then insert the variations into each of these to create three overall routes? Does my explanation make sense? Thanks
  • I always do the latter, but you could do either.

Thanks. Pretty much sorted, just need to remember how to delete the final joining leg it inserts when joining a non circular route. I've managed it once, so know it can be done.
