How add a Train Route in a Route

Hi,

maybe a strange question ;)

I am making a whole route (RV Activity Profile) in BaseCamp but this trip is interrupted by a train journey (no roads there) how can I add that train journey to the whole route.

I know I can create a route till the Departure train station and then make another route starting from the Arrival Station, but is it possible to combine the train ride without using the "direct" option for the whole route ?

Thanks
  • I don't believe so. The only way would be as you suggest, create a Direct route for that portion of the trip.
  • I create a station-to-station (point-to-point) route for my Amtrak trips. I use a GPSmap 64s.

Thanks, but unfortunately I use a Car GPS. ;)

I split the route, Route 1 goes to the Departure Train station and Route 2 starts from the Arrival Station.

Railroad routing should be simpler for the developers than road routing, but it is probably a good thing that routable train track vectors are not included as default in automotive gps devices.

I have played around with RR routing with 3rd party mapping apps and gps devices that provide a few extra tools, and I would do so again if I were taking a long trip on the rails. However, it is difficult to get accurate metro commuter arrival and departure times automatically correct without an app dedicated to the purpose.

On the train, I really don't need to "navigate" anywhere...I just follow along on the map as we (the train) go along.

The point-to-point route will let me know what station is next and how far/how long till we get there (by straight line of course). Comes in handy when waking up in the middle of the night and wishing to see where we are.

It is my understanding that the newer Nuvis will not calculate routes in the direct point to point manner, except to the first Stop (destination) in a series when using off-road setup. After that, the device may continually recalculate a route via the nearest road(s) for additional RR track Stops. So it may be better to not use routing at all for multiple stops with short legs.

The original firmware on the 2013+ Nuvi 55/56 models with Trip Routing, and perhaps other devices of that era, did use a mix and match Direct Routing/Road Routing scheme as described above. A firmware update changed the Direct Routing (off road) so that it did not include switching back to automatic road routing on all waypoints after the second route point.
