Hi all

Can someone please tell me how to get rid of these straight line which all go back to my house from the start/finish point of a ride

Garmin Basecamp latest version on Windows 7 laptop
Garmin Edge 450 device with patest software

Many thanks in advance

Mark
  • Not sure exactly where you're hoping to get rid of them.

If in BaseCamp you'll need to edit every individual track.

If you want to prevent them occurring you need to do a Clear current track at the point you actually want your track to start then save it at the end.

    Tks for the reply

Where I want to delete them from is in Basecamp in the My Collection folder tracks and when I connect the device in the My Devuce folder in the left pane in BC so when I look at all my trails I just see them.....no long lines

When I double click on one of the long straight lines it brings up the detail of the route in all its parts. I click on the entry which is the long line I want to get rid of, which may be 37 miles for eg, then click delete it doesnt actually delete

I hope im articulating this clearly enough haha. Im a beginner on this
  • If in Basecamp ...

With the track selected choose the split tool (looks like scissors) and split the track where you need to. Having split it delete the part you don't want.

Another way to remove the points is from the track points list. Try this:
    * Select the track in the data list
    * Right click and select Open
    * In the Properties tab, select the "Center Map" check box
    * Select a track point
    * Use the up/down arrows to move through the track points
    * When you get to a place that you'd like to remove points, you can either delete the points or split the track from the context menu (right click to show)
  • Chances are there are multiple points near your home at the start, end or both for each of your tracks. If they are only at the start or end, then it will be an easy to fix.

With the selection tool (arrow) click on one of the track lines in the map window to select a track. Move the selection tool near your home hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse. As it moves, a gray area will appear on the map indicating the area where the selection is being made. Make sure the area covers a section of the long line as well as your home and release the mouse button. If you see that the entire track changes color, it means there are unwanted points at both ends (if the beginning and end of a track are selected by this method, all points in between are selected as well) and this method will not work. If not, simply press the delete key and move on to the next track. (If you accidentally delete the entire track, it can be undone with ctrl-z or undo under the Edit menu).

If points are at both ends, you could cut as suggested or do the following. In the track properties window, select the first point. Find where that really long leg near the beginning and shift click on it and press delete. Go to the last point and select it. Find that really long leg near the end and shift click on the point AFTER it and press delete.

Edit: It just occurred to me that using the cut tool on all the long lines (select each track as you go) then using the selection arrow to draw a box around your home area to remove all the small tracks that will be created near your home might be the fastest method. You will need to deselect the last track by clicking in a blank area of the map with the selection tool prior to drawing the box around your home. It is important that nothing you want to keep is located near your home. If there is, move the tracks to an empty list and proceed from that list instead of My Collection.

As an aside to selecting sections of track to delete at the beginning or end, you can use Shift-Home or Shift-End to automatically select all of the track points either before or after the critical point. This makes truncating a track to get rid of the long straight lines fairly fast, once you have identified the point at which that long line begins or ends.

I know I often forget to Clear the tracklog after saving, so I have to do this editing from time to time.
