Transferring Routes Nav V to Nav V loses shaping points.

On a ride with 4 other guys with Nav V's last week. My routes included way points and shaping points. I transferred the routes from my unit to each one of theirs via the Bluetooth option in Trip Planner. All the routes in their units were different than mine. When I looked at the route in the map on my unit I can plainly see the shaping points represented by blue dots. When I look at their maps there are no shaping points, simply my way points. The result being that each GPS calculated the route based on its internal preferences from way point to way point without the benefit of my shaping points.

So the question is why didn't the transfer include my shaping points? Is there a setting that controls this? Assuming there isn't then the only solution I can think of is to add way points anywhere the route turns so their GPS has no choice but to follow my route.

Any ideas?

UPDATE: I just called Garmin and sure enough the Bluetooth Transfer option does NOT take the shaping points along. I'll just have to add more waypoints next time.

Well, that's certainly interesting news! With your permission I will copy this into the ADVRider thread on the Nav V.

In the case of the NAV5 to NAV5 transfer issue, the reason the ShapingPoints are removed is because the NAV5 (all Garmin devices) saves the route first as a Standard GPX file before Transfer. ShapingPoints are not 'standard' GPX data, they are Garmin specific GPS data. If Garmin didn't do this and you saved a Route with ShapingPoints and gave it to a device that didn't support ShapingPoints, most of those devices would see only the ViaPoints anyway. But, some Garmin devices would see the ShapingPoints as ViaPoints. Those Garmin devices would most likely see too many ViaPoints in the Route data and have a problem calculating the correct route - most likely truncating the route at the 50th route point.

So, since Garmin always errors on the side of Less-is-better, no ShapingPoints are saved to GPX on the device. Now, one could rationally argue that since this is a NAV5/zumo590 to NAV5/zumo590 transfer only option anyway, Garmin should leave the ShapingPoints in the GPX data.
