Same Data Multiple Times

Hello everyone!
I am new to BaseCamp and new to my Garmin GPSmap 62s, so please excuse my silly questions. I use my 62s to mark my hikes and then make notes on BaseCamp when I return home. Out in the field I'm usually in a rush, because the dogs and my friends are waiting, so I typically abbreviate or make spelling mistakes. It's easy enough to fix that back at BaseCamp. One of my problems is that I don't know how to make those changes show up on my 62s. I see the original mistakes, but not the new edits. My second problem is that on BaseCamp I have the same information listed multiple times because I download after each weekend trip. So I have the very first hike downloaded say five times and the second weekend trip downloaded four times and so on. Can someone tell me what's the best way to only have one set and the set that has the corrected names?
Thank you so much,
Misty
  • BaseCamp Updates

    I'm doing something similar with a 64s.

I start with a list in BaseCamp, which has waypoints, tracks, routes and geocaches. I export this list to a single GPX file and copy it to the handheld/Garmin/GPX folder.

Back home after a hike, I connect the handheld and upload any new saved tracks and field-created waypoints from the handheld into the same BaseCamp list.

Once I have done so, I delete them from the handheld. I also delete the GPX file from the handheld.

Then the next time I go out to the same area, I export the list from BaseCamp to the device. That way, my list always has the updated data, and I only have it showing up once on the handheld.

The GPSMap 62 allows editing data directly on the device from within BaseCamp. You should be able to mark the waypoints in the field, attach the 62 to your PC, and directly update the waypoints under the device icon in BaseCamp. When you eject the device, it should properly show the updated waypoints.

Racer, Thanks for the help! I see where I'm able to make the changes. But it seems to make them to only one batch of data. I don't understand why I have more than one copy of a waypoint to begin with. When I open up BaseCamp I have

"Data received from GPSMAP 62s (Unit Id ...)(G:)"
"Data received from GPSMAP 62s (Unit Id ...)(H:)"
"Data received from Memory Card (I:)"

Each one of those lists has the various dates and times that I downloaded stuff. When I click on a list, the routes and waypoints are all the same except for the changes that some of them received. Is there a certain place that I need to make the changes from or a way to update them all? I know there is something I'm missing because I really don't need eight copies of the same hike. Then once my list is updated on BaseCamp what is the best way to make those change appear on the 62s and the old data to disappear? Thank you for your time, it is appreciated!

If this is all for one GPS device (your GPSMAP 62s), then what you are seeing isn't the expected behavior. The top two should all go into one group (minus the drive letter). I'm not sure about the "Memory Card" one, I'll need to do some testing.

The "duplicated data" that you are seeing probably isn't actually separate copies of the data. The data is showing up in different lists, but BaseCamp recognizes that it is the same and creates a reference back to the same data. To test this, you can change a waypoint symbol in one place and then go check that same waypoint in the other.

I personally prefer to keep my own organization structure in BaseCamp with lists and folders. There are various ways to move things around in BaseCamp (Send To, copy/paste, drag & drop). I typically use "Send To" and then send it to the list that I created for a particular hike or place. If you do it this way, you don't even need to use the "Send to Device" or "Receive from Device" menu items.

    Racer,
Thanks again for all of your help. I have a wedding tomorrow, but hopefully I can dig into this on Saturday and give your tips a shot. I'll let you know what I can figure it out. Have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks for the help. In order for mine to work, I had to make the edits to the internal storage. That was the only way the changes appeared on the device itself. Have a great day!
