Loading waypoints to GPSmap 62s

I keep getting caught by loading waypoints to my GPSmap 62s using Basecamp then when I go to use them, they are not there.

I think one problem has been that there is nothing to indicate the number of waypoints in use so if stored to Internal Storage then it could be full. So I usually load to the User Data on the Memory Card but I have still had occasions when they have not been stored.

I have moved all my waypoints from Internal Storage to User Data in the hope that it will not happen again.

Is there any obvious reason why the waypoints are not always loaded into the GPSmap 62s. I had never had problem like this with Mapsource and still use that to actually create the waypoints then copy them over.
  • It's unlikely that you're loading too many, unless you load thousands of them?

More likely is that it's an indexing issue on the card. If you've sent waypoints first check they are there by looking in the GPX folder. If they are and not showing remove the card, switch on your GPS then off again once it's fully on. Reinstall the card and switch on, this forces the GPS to re-index the card.

Thanks, I have tried that. I do have a lot of waypoints but I have deleted many now.

I have loaded the places I need tomorrow into another GPS which I have more confidence in. The GPSMap 62s is very good for sensitivity and quick start up but I just don't trust the system for adding waypoints and hate Basecamp, very poor piece of software.
  • Never had a problem either using Basecamp or transferring data to my 5 GPS so whatever issues you're having can be resolved. Basecamp can take a bit of getting used to but once you've mastered it you should have no issues.

Since you mention using an add-on memory card, I highly recommend that you only add maps and data to the card and leave the internal memory alone. The trick of forcing a reindex while in the field only works if your data is on a removable card. If the index of your internal memory has a problem, the only way to correct that is to connect it to the computer and delete the internal data via the computer.

I have had an occasional issue when I inadvertently had the same waypoints/data loaded to the internal and external memory. I'm pretty careful to keep the internal memory free of user data.
  • Limits for the 62 series are:
    2,000 GPX files
    2,000 waypoints
    5,000 geocaches
200 routes, 250 max. points per route**
    200 saved tracks
    2,000 archive tracks*
    10,000 points max per track
    100 custom map tiles
    250 BirdsEye Imagery files
    Approximately 3,000 mapping segments

*Archive tracks do not count against GPX file limit; 1 archive track per gpx file.
** 250 max. points is for Direct Routes, all others are limited to max. 50 user points.

Sometimes a device will require a Master Reset to regain proper functionality. You should download your data before carrying out a Master Reset as user data may be lost. For the 62 series the procedure starts with the device off.
Hold down the Enter + Page + Power buttons.
Release only the Power button when "GARMIN" appears.
Continue to hold down the Enter + Page buttons until you see a question about erasing data.
    Answer yes.

This will return all settings to the factory default. It will also take awhile for the device to acquire satellite data and lock. You may be able to save time configuring your device by downloading your profiles and pasting them back after the Reset. But I am not sure of this.
